These are very cool and clean to use. Great for practice without wasting paper and ink and making a huge mess. My daughter had a lot of fun with these as well.

Our art-loving 13 year old appreciated getting 2 of these magic water papers. She's not doing calligraphy, but water painting with her friend. These roll up into a tube that is easily stored without taking up much space. They allow the kids to create/ practice new designs together before putting them on paper, or just for being silly, or teaching each other new designs. It is also a soothing activity that relaxes the body...a huge benefit during this time when kids are so stressed out and anxious. She can take these when she travels to visit her other grandparents. I bought her a couple of water reservoir brushes for trips or to just experiment with too.

I ordered these to have a sort of reusable notebook for practicing my Japanese--I'm at the point in my studies where my only moderately decent knowledge of the hiragana and katakana are becoming apparent as a weak point, and while there ARE apps out there which would let me practice digitally, pen and paper or brush and scroll tend to build the connections better in my brain. But since we're also traveling long-term for my partner's work, it's important that whatever I opt for be easy to pack in a small space, and I'd prefer more sustainable than generating a bunch of waste paper, so it was either these scrolls or a chalkboard, and chalk's far more messy. These work quite well, and while they do take a while to dry, I've tied a small cord that I can loop over each end of one of the dowels and hang the scroll on anything (nail, hanger, hook, etc.) to dry out thoroughly overnight. While I'm using them to practice my kana and kanji, there are times I also opt to use them for ephemeral paintings as a meditative practice, and they work fairly well for that, too.
