What Are Valve Covers and What Are They Made From?

  • Valve covers are protective enclosures that sit on top of the engine’s head(s), covering the valve train and other vital components. They are typically made from materials like aluminum, steel, plastic, or composite materials. Aluminum and steel valve covers are common in older vehicles and offer durability and heat resistance. Plastic or composite covers are often found in newer cars, providing weight savings and resistance to corrosion.
  • The primary function of a valve cover is to shield the valve train, camshafts, and other parts from debris, dirt, and dust while containing the engine oil and preventing leaks. However, they also can be dressed up to provide your engine with a customized look.

Still haven't been able to figure out what coils are to be used with these valve covers, nothing fits

OK so…These are 4 1/4 inches tall for people who need to know.I used the ls6 coils that slant. As a result the lid of this thing on the passenger side needs to have room in the back to slide back then forward…. Thaaaaats not happening for like … 99% of us since most of us set our engines back. So maybe use the truck ones. The height of em cleared the booster on the drivers side. This went in a 73-87 C10 pickup. For the issues of the slide back for top cover install, I cut the bottom off the lid so I could drop down the covers.. I cut both sides. Pics included so you can see.On the drivers side of a c10 the booster bracket needed to be cut.. it’s like a flange that’s welded to the firewall… will not go on if not trimmed or notched. I just grinded it down and filed the last bit.Used Felpro gaskets cuz the included ones are terribly flimsy looking. Don’t use the supplied bolts for the valve cover they’re terribly threaded and had a hard time starting and I felt them chewing up the threads. Pulled the bolt and confirmed they’re just not good. I went and got some M6 1.0 x 75 mm long. That was the longest they had and they caught but barely. Once tightened plenty of meat into the heads but 80mm would be better. The bolts all need a 12 point socket. I hate 12 point I only have 6 point in 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 drives. Sooo I used my closed ended wrenches for most of the install. You’ll need pretty much just a 10 mm 12 point and a 6mm for the lid. the valve cover presses against my alternator on the drivers side but no issues on the passenger.Biggest issue with these will be oil changes but.. that’s the name of the game.4 stars for look and finish of this product. Didn’t get 5 due to hardware and the gasket. Someone mentioned adding some grease into the channel that holds the gasket to get them to stay during install… he’s spot on.I put these on because I put a Truck Norris cam in and then the accy bracket that moves around the alt.Kinda went crazy on the truck last couple weeks but this does look great for the price point.Fitment will vary wildly according to your build but if you can swing it.. I say go for it.

I'll start with the bad.The groove for the valve cover seal is l, I believe, cut too wide. I had to use fel pro gaskets and even still had to grease the groove for the gaskets to stay in. Also the bolts to hold the cover are either a touch to long or the valve covers are not drilled deep enough, simple solution with an o-ring under the bolt head. But overall they look great and seem to be built well. Definitely has that old school look.
