Let it soak for at least a week (up to a couple of months) to eliminate any aldehydes, amino, and fusel oils that may be present. Use approximately 1 cup of carbon for every 4-5 liters of spirit. This process removes the harshness typically associated with moonshine, resulting in clean, tasteless, and odorless spirits, ready for flavoring. The carbon works as a kind of "molecular sieve" by capturing molecules larger than ethanol in its pores and surface energies, effectively removing them. It does not remove methanol, but only larger molecules (such as fusel oils). Additionally, the trapped molecules are sometimes held rather loosely, so if you filter too quickly, they may be washed off the carbon and back into your spirits.
