I can't believe how long I waited to get one of these! I suppose it is because I don't have to shorten bolts all that often. Before this tool, I used a file to remove the burs of cut bolts and chamfer the end. That method works reasonably well, but its a bit tedious and results are imperfect.Sometimes, if I was really thinking ahead, I would pre-thread a nut onto the bolt, make the cut, file of sand off the burs and then unthread the nut, which heightened the chance that the threads would be "restored" if filing/sanding caused some damage and might have made the bolt difficult to get "started."With this tool it's all unnecessary. The chamfered cut is nearly as good as a factory finish and threading a bolt into a hole is assured. On my first use, I made a VERY messy cut of a bolt (pictured -- blurry, unfortunately). "Restoral" of the bolt end using this tool was so good it took literally zero effort to thread the cut bolt into the threaded hole.I was so excited I forgot to take the "after" photo and have become so lazy from how easy it is to use this that I refused to remove the bolt to take the after photo!I'll try to remedy that on my next project.

I bought this product to help me on my job-sites. We use a bandsaw to cut a lot of threaded rod and often found that the hex nuts wouldn’t start threading easy. This tool helped eliminate the problem, I just wish it had worked a bit longer than the week plus I had it.

Used on metal and wood and seems to work fine.

This is a well-made tool that should last for quite a while. I was curious if it would work better with a drill press than a power drill. I decided to test both ways using two identical 3/8-inch bolts. After screwing a hex nut on each bolt, I cut some of the threads off of each one with a hacksaw. You can see the result in the attached pictures. Since the hacksaw left burrs & fouled the threads, I was unable to remove the hex nut from either bolt. I first used the drill press with this tool and the results were excellent. I was able to remove the hex nut from the bolt with just my hands. The chamfer was smooth and attractive. I then tried using my power drill. Surprisingly, it gave very similar results. Doing the chamfers either way only took seconds to do. There was no recommended RPM that was given by the manufacturer for using this tool, but I found recommendations given by other sellers of this type of tool on Amazon. Based on that, I set my drill press to its lowest setting of 500 RPM. I also did my best to approximate a similar RPM when using the power drill. It works best at slower speeds. I saw no visible signs of wear or chipping of the tool cutters after chamfering the two bolts.FYI, several of the product pictures show & say that you get two extra shanks with this tool. Like several other reviewers, I received only one extra shank.Overall this is an excellent tool that I would recommend considering when looking for a tool like this.

Threaded bolts are offered in a variety of sizes but often I find myself have to cut a bolt to length for a particular application. I use a hacksaw for this and the end of the bolt is usually left with a rough surface that can cut fingers and make it difficult to fit a nut. I would usually take a file to round off the end of the bolt but that would be time-consuming and fiddly to get a nice finish. This tool from Opcloud looked as like it would make this process much quicker and easier, so I ordered one.The bell-shaped tool is supplied with two ¼” hex shanks in a plastic container with a plugged cap. The bell appears to be made from aluminum (or an alloy of that) and has 3 hard metal cutters inset into the inner walls. A steel shank is screwed into the bell and fits into the chuck of an electric drill. I don’t know why two identical shanks are provided – it implies that they are prone to failure at some point. No instructions are provided but I thought that how to use this tool would be obvious. This was not the case and my initial attempts to smooth off the end of a 3/16” bolt were met with complete failure – the cutting blades just bounced around over the end of the bolt and made it look much worse than when I started. After a bit of practice, I learned that a very firm hand is needed to hold the electric drill to ensure that the cutters were positioned concentrically to the bolt. The drill needed to be started at high speed before being pushed onto the end of the bolt to produce a usable finish result. I also used cutting oil on the end of the bolt which made things much easier and should reduce wear on the cutting blades. The result wasn’t pretty but I had no trouble fitting a nut onto the finished bolt. I think that the use of a drill press would make this process much easier. This is not a tool I will use a lot but when I need to cut bolts to a shorter length, I think it will be invaluable. It doesn’t give perfect results but it’s good enough for my needs.

You really need to press down to be able to use this with good results. Unfortunately you won't be able to just hold the bolt and deburr it nicely to get a nice chamfer after a cut, so without a vice it is kind of worthless. If you have a vice and can clamp the bolt and press down on it hard, then this tool will get it done with some practice and give good results. But otherwise it's impossible to get a good chamfer.

This tool is sort of like a big pencil sharpener for metal. It works great for cleaning the rough end of a cut or damaged bolt thread or for smoothing cut rod. Attaches to a drill with 1/4" hex shank and includes extra 1/4" shanks. The quality is pretty good and the price is very affordable. 5 stars.
