About this item

  • An abrasive diamond grit stone to cut the hollow -- just like a powered grinder
  • Adjustable thumbscrews that keep the stone centered -- essential to match the blade you have and for a consistent job every time
  • An industrial hard plastic handle that will not scratch or dull your blade
  • It's the only sharpener that cuts the hollow and deburs the edges all in one convenient tool

Maintain the EDGE Hockey player ice skate 1/2" radius of hollow sharpener is for adult skaters. See our 3/8" model for lighter players. Maintain the EDGE is the only handheld hockey player skate sharpener on the market that automatically turns the sharpening stone to promote even wear for more consistent results. This is an essential feature for a long-lasting and effective sharpener. It’s what gives our products an extra EDGE. Our sharpener cuts the hollow just like a powered grinder, features adjustable thumbscrews that keep the stone centered (which is essential to match the blade you have and to even out the edges), has an industrial hard plastic handle that will not scratch or dull your blade and a super-abrasive diamond grit stone to cut the hollow, giving the longest life available. A convenient deburring stone is attached to the back of the sharpener. It's the only sharpener on the market that cuts the hollow and deburs the edges all in one convenient tool. Please note: Our sharpeners are designed for hockey player skates only, and are not intended for use on goalie skates or figure skates. Additional note about sizing: Our 1/2" tool grinds a 1/2" hollow. Since burrs left on skates make the skate feel dull, however, those who aren't as meticulous about cleaning up the edge may find our 3/8" sharpener to be more to their liking.

i have a pair of old cheap skates that i practiced on with this b4 risking my nicer skates. at first i thought it was defective because it was only sharpening the outside edge; i had a nice burr the full length of the blade on the outside but nothing on the inside. i got mad and gave up but tried again later and kept at it for what seemed like an eternity and finally the inside edge got sharp too. i guess the skates were just that bad to start with. nice product that actually sharpens properly with a hollow and doesnt just touch up the edges like most other manual sharpeners

I've tried a handful of different "hand" sharpeners over the years to maintain a good edge between sharpenings at the skate shop, and this one works pretty well. It uses a replaceable diamond cylinder of your desired radius of hollow to sharpen the blade, but has a mechanism to keep the cylinder turning in the sharpener so you don't wear down one side prematurely. Note you can't change to a different radius cylinder with the same sharpener body - they're specific to the radius that it came with. It also has adjustable width, so you're not wobbling back and forth or trying to shim up the blade with tape like with some older sharpeners like the Pro Filer. Great for touch-ups, and a neat little tool.

The design is good. The improvement to DIAMOND abrasive might allow it to work on harder alloy skates such as I have. There is still a bit of elbow grease required to significantly sharpen the blades if they are fairly dull as mine were. The 'old' carbide (or whatever it was) abrasive doesn't cut the mustard- or the skate blades- at least after a few times of use.I'd like to turn mine in for a new one.

I was really hopeful since the product has good reviews and the video demo seemed to look like it worked. I used the sharpener on my skates and I noticed immediately that the hollow was almost flat. It removed my entire existing hollow, but I thought maybe it was my imagination and took my skates to the game. I was sliding around all over the place with no edges. I suppose the product might’ve worked if I only weighed 75 pounds and didn’t know how to skate. Anyone who skates and plays real hockey would not be happy with this product and should save their money. I am now on my way to the pro shop to get my skates sharpened for real before my next game tonight. I wish I knew a good way to get a refund.

I sometimes see newbies struggling on inadequately sharpened blades. When i'm in a good mood I've taken out the classic Y sharpener to give them a slightly better edge. That's a big part of what I had in mindn with this purchase. However, it seriously does grind into the blade and create a hollow. Takes maybe 7-20 passes, and you want to be holding it straight. So, not realistic when somebody is holding the wall with their knee bent and I'm trying to give them a quick sharpen.I'd been wanting an Edge Again for a few years. Glad I waited and bought this one instead. Leaves a little steel dust behind, so you'll want a rag after the flat honing stone. We use a SkatePal sharpener at the rink, which has been out of alignment for years, and keeps breaking. Horrible product, now that Bauer owns it. Good luck ever tracking down the part numbers for the common parts that break. I've sharpened a lot of skates on that machine, but never trusted my own on it.With this Maintain the Edge, I've sharpened mine. Not sure when I'll bother going across town to have them done on the proper grinding wheel again. What sold me, was the fellow (owner? the guy who invented it?) sitting in the product video, showing how to use it. No media hype, no wasted money spent making a highly produced dynamic commercial. As opposed to Edge Again. (Which I never did quite understand why they ignore the middle of the hollow). EA was all about it being mentioned by an NHL announcer, a paid promotional spot. And some NHL player coming off the ice to have his crew quickly touch up his edge.I'm not trying to pretend I use the same tools as the NHL. I just want my skates to reliably have the Radius of Hollow I choose, and not have to waste two hours (round trip plus waiting time) going to have them sharpened. Not sure how many sharpens I'll get out of it, I might have bought the "pro" version for longer life, but they didn't have it in my ROH.

7 skaters and no sharpening close by so this will get us by. Just requires many strokes to get it where needed

if you've played a season, by now you have your trusted pro shop employee allowed to sharpen your skates. even then you know the anxiety while you wait if you ever had a bad sharpening.the newer machines lessons the chance of mistakes but my personal feeling is they just don't get the heel and toe enough. I have tried all of the other brands through the years and nothing compares to these modern sharpeners from Maintain the Edge. Elegant engineering and proven reliability makes this the only sharpening devices I'll ever use and the 1/2" is just my cut. last season I used the 3/8" version and loved it so I was only going from advice of others to try the 1/2" for my size (5'9" and 185 post dump) and playing style. and what a match it is! and cut in no time at all as they were due to be sharpened but always amazed how quickly results are seen.this is exactly what i need for my compulsive desire to sharpen while waiting so they are always fresh. not to mention i can get the entire blade toe to heel. this cut is perfect right off the bench.I know the quality is in the device from having both of the other sizes and as a youth hockey coach they get plenty of abuse by the parents and players and they function perfect every time season after season (yet to have one fail). Now i know what my larger brother will be getting for Christmas. Really this is the perfect gift for any hockey player. 'maintain the edge' of your game with control of your edges (on and off the ice).

On the surface this is a clever device that rotates the sharpening surface with each pass. But it instantly dulled my skates the first time I used it. I normally get my skates sharpened with a 1/2" radius stone and when I tried the 1/2" model out between sharpenings it made the runners nearly flat and impossible to skate on.I've since read some content on FB where the manufacturer indicates that "our 1/2” will feel similar to a machine-ground 5/8”. So, I guess if you're buying one you should size down but it really shouldn't require this kind of guess work. 1/2" should be 1/2".
