The picture made it look like I was getting a half hatchet with a blackened head but it came shiny with some kind of protected finish on it and the nail pull wire cut spot was not finished I have no problem putting in a little work to make it work right but if that’s not for you maybe look at a different brand and the grain orientation on the handle isn’t the right way so that will have to be swapped out for one with a better grain orientation but non of those thing are a deal breaker if you don’t mind putting in a little more work once you get it

This is not a Truper brand hatchet it is a Collins. The head is a different shape and it came very dull.

Although the handle was fitted well, the handle is too thick for me. Didn't take long to shave it to my preference. The additional spit wedge and step wedge are an added bonus to the proper handle fitting, so as to ensure a long life free of coming loose. The blade was pretty dull as expected; however, it's solid and tempered. As for the cost, I was happy with the base price, but I ended up spending an additional $25.00 for shipping.Overall, I'm happy with the purchase and look forward to using it over the next 30-40 years.P.S. Throw in a cheap sheath maybe? Nylon or something.

I really like this hatchet; it's weighted right, the taper isn't too strong, and it sharpens up easy. But that's the thing; you have to sharpen it up and possibly regrind the edge to a proper hatchet edge. But when that's done with you've got yourself a decent and strong crafted tool.

Out of the box I was impressed with the quality for the money. I took it out and chopped up a bunch of wood and made a fire no problem. The steel seems to be good quality but I would recamend reprofiling the edge so that it is more like a regular axe blade but very pleased for the money

Good value for the price. This will do the job for an around the camp chores. Reminds of something that would be used in the movie 'Defiance' with Daniel Craig. Comes without an edge. Be ready to spend some time with a slow sipped grinder. Don't let it heat up.

this is a great hatchet. the pitcure makes the head seem way bigger than it actually is. the head is 7 3/16" long/17.2cm from edge to the end of the hammer end, and 3.5" long/9cm from top to bottom of the edge. the handle is 11.5" long from end to where it meets the head, and totals a bit less than 13.5" long. the head is secured to the handle with a similar method to older make axes: with a hole in the head that the handle goas through, and a nail pounded into the handle to widen it and hold the head in place, except instead of a screw, a ring is used, and it is much cleaner, with no cracks in the wood.the handle is waxed or polished, and it feels good in the hand. it does not catch and thus tear at the skin, but does not slip easily, especially with a strong grip. there were some tags on it, and i scrapped them off, but they left adhesive where they had been, which caught the skin on my hand, which was VERY uncomfortable. i wore it out, and it no longer troubles me.the head comes with a, lets put it frankly, s***ty edge, compared to what it should be. i tried it on a large 2x4 (on the corner), and it bit about .5" down (i wasn't very strong at the time, so if you have lifted, you will bit deeper by a long shot). it is not tool-grade, which would be a mistake buying. tool grade is tough as hell, but harder than hell to sharpen. i used a bench grinder to sharped this axe, along with a used axe i had (tool grade steel) that had been poorly treated by its previous owner. this was much easier to sharpen*, though still hard.*remember: an axe edge whould not be razor sharp, rather it should be somewhat rounded, but still sharp. if it goes into a knot in a tree, then the edge can be damaged, even cracked.the black coating to protect the axe head aagainst the elements is way beyond anything i have prviously come across (i admit, i am still pretty young), to the point of overkill. it took a second for my benchgrinder to get through the coating to the steel underneath. it won't come off easily.when choked up all the way up the handle, the head feels like it weight about 9-10 ounces, but feels like 13-15 at the end of the handle. (my thoughts)I would HIGHLY recommend this to anyone looking for a good sized hatchet to camp with. not recommended for trees 10" thick obviously, but will handle anything from 1-6" thick without trouble, depending on the users strength.UPDATE: July 21, 2013I used this is Yosemite, and turns out, its not so good. So I dropped the five star and replaced it with three. The head is simply too thin to put on a reliable edge without making it so thin is might break. The handle is also too short, so the leverage is not very good. Honestly, get something bigger. this is not reliable.

THe hatchet is constructed solidly, the angle of the bevel seems like it would be great for chopping efficiently, but on a plank of Alder, all this did out of the box was bounce off leaving a small ding. In comparison my other unknown brand hatchet would put a two inch deep cut in there. Its not a bad design, but just seems like something produced en masse and without care for an edge.

Unlike other similar in price hatchets, which you may find in a local super center, this one comes well sharpened along with a rubber blade protector. I love the wooden handle, it reduces the recoil. I also found it easy to resharpen with a wet stone after I used it and missed the firewood a few times, so it hit the rocky ground instead. It went through 1 - 1 1/2 inch thick pine limbs in one-two strikes like a charm.
