I got this set of mylar blankets to keep in my car just in case we ever end up stuck in the cold, and need help staying warm. However, I'm not a big fan of relying on items in an emergency that I am unsure will successfully work. So I did an experiment to judge the effectiveness of using one of these blankets. It was 28 degrees Fahrenheit when I tested how well one of these blankets would help in the cold. My conclusion is that it does help as a barrier against certain conditions, such as snowfall or high winds, as long as you have a way to keep it steady. This blanket can keep you warm if you're able to wrap it around you like an enclosed pocket, which would be very difficult in high winds. It does not create warmth that doesn't already exist. This blanket can help trap your body heat, which can keep you warm. But it is not a heat source on its own. This blanket can help fend off some weather conditions, but not as a solitary solution. In extreme cold, this blanket may be able to give you a little bit more time to find a better solution, but it is not a solution by itself. Do I still keep these blankets in my car? Yes. I do, because in a true emergency using every resource available to you is always the best option.

These space-age blankets are like something straight out of NASA, which is kind of cool when you think about it. They're not your typical cozy blankets for snuggling up on the couch, though. These bad boys are all about survival. Whether you're camping, hiking, or caught in an unexpected emergency, these thermal foil blankets got your back. Reflective, heavy-duty, and extra large, they'll keep you warm and visible when you need it most. Just don't expect the luxury of a plush throw — these are strictly for practical purposes.*This product was given to me through the Amazon Vine program for my honest and unbiased opinion. I have no affiliation with the company/seller. I hope you find this review helpful in your decision-making process. *

Before testing this blanket, I'd only used the much cheaper versions that are all silver, and packaged in clear plastic. Those ones usually ripped as soon as you started to open them. These blankets are far superior. No rips and tears, and I even was able to fold it back up and put it back in the little sleeve. I probably wouldn't have been able to do that if I'd been wrapped up in it for any amount of time, but while you can see the original fold lines, it only takes about 5 minutes to refold. It says it is reusuable. I don't think that means you can use it today, then again in 2 weeks, then again next year. I DO think that you can use it day after day if needed though. I like the black and silver sides, because you can decide which way to face out depending on if you want to absorb sunlight, reflect maximum heat, remain hidden in the night, or attract attention. It isn't too small either, about the size of my full mattress. It also comes with a nice case, and a trinket caribineer compass. As far as the blanket itself, it seems like a sturdier version of any emergency blanket. It is like wrapping yourself if a mix of tin foil and crinkle paper. It isn't soft and fuzzy, and it isn't comfortable, but for it's designed use, keeping you safe from harsh elements, it should give you a good advantage for very little use of space and weight. Keep one in the car, one in the office, one at home, and give one to a friend, and then forget they exist until you need them. These are a bit pricy. Maybe you could get the same quality for a few bucks cheaper, but it is hard to say. As you go cheaper the quality and sturdiness definately drops with these emergency blankets. All I can say is that these are definately of the higher end in quality and durability for so light and thin a blanket.

Back in the 1970s I used the space blanket in our scout troop. It was gold on one side and silver on the other. They lasted through several campouts and were used a variety of ways. Now that I am an old fart my idea of camping is a little like glamping, but I still enjoy a long hike through the woods. That is why I wanted this set of emergency blankets. I need them for emergencies, but they can be used so many other ways. These blankets are so thin that they don't even tell you how thin. They are still tear resistant but a sharp object will puncture them easily. We used to use cellophane tape to repair the holes because they used to be very expensive. Thats not the case with these blankets. You get four gigantic blankets for less than we paid for one. These blankets are really big so using them as a tent is not unreasonable. The ad does not give the blanket justice for the myriad of uses you could find. How about a solar warmer? What about a condensation cycle water capture system? What about a refrigerator cover. The main purpose though is to have one around for when you get stuck in the wild in inclement weather that could kill you. It could save your life. Flip the silver side out to attract attention or to keep cool in very hot weather. Silver side in to stay warmThe extra thing about this set is the packaging. I love the zippered box it comes in. The included carabiner may be cheap plastic, but it has a compass. Each blanket has a little bag it comes in. I had the usual trouble getting a blanket back into the bag, but the bag had enough extra space for even my clumsy folding. What more could you want in a box full of emergency blankets? This set was just right for me.

If you plan on getting a mylar blanket for multiple camping uses, look elsewhere. These would be great for emergencies but they wouldn't last more than a couple uses. The case is nice and the compass is a plus, but they almost seem like a gimmick just to justify a higher price. I have mylar blankets in Ziplock baggies that would be just as effective.
