This planted is substantial and will not fall off your railing if it is the right size. I've fit about 6 plants in it and it is doing well. I was debating whether to drill holes on the bottom as I don't know how much water fits in the reservoir, but I don't want water dripping onto my porch and staining the cement. Not sure what solution there is.. will wait to see how well my flowers do or if they get root rot.

Perfect! You can set it up for watering from below. There are two compartments on either side that have a hollow but sealed tube. I you drill a hole in the top and then set up for automatic "drip" watering in these compartments, any excess above the tubes will flow out the bottom.By the way, watering from below keeps the soil on top rather dry and inhibits weed growth. Your plants will send roots down to the water.
