It works OK as a modem, I think. I do have much slower download speed than the cable company promised but it's TBD whether that's this modem/router or something else responsible. I really liked the idea of having parental controls without having to pay for a monthly service but it's not working out as expected. You have to get a free OPENDNS account to set up PC and I can login to OPENDNS from their site but when I use that same login to get to PCs through the modem app, it just spins until it fails so effectively I have no PCs with this device despite their claims. I think it's been a know issue for months and months with no resolution. So if you need PCs, don't expect to have them with this device. I called support and they really just had no idea what to do about it.--Update --Though firmware updates are supposed to be automatically pushed by your ISP per Netgear. Mine (Atlantic Broadband) does not but they were willing to do it upon request and with the current Firmware, PCs work as advertised. Wasteds several hours of my life figuring out that one. I hope this saves someone elsse from the same ordeal. About the speed, this router is not as fast as ones with 5G but I moved it to a slightly more central area and that helped so it's fast enough for me (I get about 30 Mbps though the advertized speed of my ISP is 100Mbps). The rented 5G one I tried got me more like 60Mbps.

Replaced my xfinity wifi modem($10/month rental) on May 21, 2016. This modem is way better and faster than the one from comcast. No more stalling on streaming programs. I would highly recommend this product to those who want to get rid of the rented unit.Replaced my xfinity wifi modem($10/month rental) on May 21, 2016. After reading several negative reviews I thought I should even the playing field a little. I went with this model of Netgear for it's modem and wireless router combo which is well priced and cheaper than buying separate modem and router of a similar quality. I have recently set the modem and I am pleased so far. I first had to contact Time Warner Cable for set up. After it being plugged in, they will ask for the MAC # located on the package box and they do the rest. After the internet is active which is confirmed by a direct Ethernet cable to computer you can log on to the website provided on the instructions to set up a wireless name and network key. After that is set up you can now use wireless devices. I have had no issues as far as speed. Both direct connection and wireless is giving me around 36Mbps download speed on a 30Mbps plan as well as almost 6Mbps upload. I have a 1320sq ft single story home and the speed is the same anywhere around the house. I currently have my Xbox one directly connected playing netflix and 3 wireless devices running internet apps with no interruption. I also like the small size of the unit for being a combo device and the green lights are small and non distracting. I also like that this unit comes with a Ethernet cable which is helpful.

I purchased this since paying rental fees for ISP modems is ridiculous! Just think, depending on what your ISP charges, you can pay for this within 10 months or less. It should last for several years as well.Out of the box, this is an easy modem/router to set up and get going. With our ISP (Comcast), all I had to do is plug it in. It automatically received the appropriate information from Comcast and updated the IP, Gateway, and DNS settings. It then rebooted. Accessing it is easy and the instructions are straight forward. It has supported the speeds I'm paying for (75Mbps U/D). Most people complaining about the WiFi likely have one (or both) of two issues:1. They live in a subdivision where almost every house has WiFi. The router has the channel settings to be "automatic". When I went and looked at this, over 10 houses were on the same channel that this router selected. The common ones seem to be 1, 5, and 10. Try manually setting the channel to one of the ones that aren't being used - service will be reliable and connections stronger and faster!2. They are too far away from the router itself or there are metallic items blocking or close by the router. We set ours up in the front office on top of a bookshelf. I have no connectivity issues. I even get WiFi from my neighbors house approximately away. Unless you live in a mansion, this should be a problem. I also suspect the problems people are having are more related to 1.All-in-all, this isn't too bad of a modem/router. Double check with your ISP that this will work - most of the major companies it should.
