At Outdoor Research, we think that life gets better the minute we step out the door on a new adventure, no matter how big or small. We learn about ourselves, each other and the environment every time we get out. We come home a little wiser and stronger. We see the world more clearly, and that compels us to treat it better. More than anything, we’re convinced that if we inspire more people to get outside, the world will be a better place.

Outdoor Research X-Gaiters

Outdoor Research was founded on the X-Gaiter. Our first ever product, inspired by a frostbite fail on Denali, was the first of its kind. Built for extreme weather and encapsulated by a rugged, insulated interior with an easily-adjustable, and easy-to-repair instep strap. So naturally, the 2019 version of this industry-revolutionizing classic builds off this legacy with a few improvements: Unprecedented warmth, streamlined fit with minimal bulk, and an incredibly lightweight construction.

These aerogel gaiters allowed me to use my lighter, single wall mountaineering boots on 19k+ ft (5800 m) climbs. My highest so far is Chimborazo at over 20k ft. Knowing their vulnerability to tears, especially due to crampons, I opted to wear my tough regular gaiters over the top. This set-up was still lighter and more nimble than double boots. I needed Large for size 42 mountaineering boots. However, there is such difference in exterior boot size that may not be universal size advice. These are very difficult to get on over the boot. That gave me great confidence they were not going to slide up or off, and I had no problems during climbs. Crampons fit well over them. But I left them on the boots in between climbs so that I didn't have to struggle to get them on during early morning gear up. I highly recommend for extra warmth if you take care to protect them from damage.

I purchased this a couple of months ago and finally used it today for a hike. I put them on when there was 6 inches of snow on the ground on top but when I took them off , one of them was torn and the other looks like it will in the next hike. I did not use them on rocks and some muddy sections and only one mile.

I like these gaiters. They really improved the insulation of my single boot setup. But there were a few issues I noticed:1) The strap system on the sides does have the tendency to come off. More of an annoyance, as I didn’t really notice any major loss to the gaiters fit.2) The gaiter will get cut, and will start oozing powdery aerogel. I figured this would happen, but not on the first use! It appears to be mended decently with tenacious tape, but I am concerned about the gaiter’s longevity. Some have mentioned that wearing a second gaiter adds security, but this specific rip occurred below a typical gaiter’s cutoff, and it seems a little redundant to have to double up.
