I went through two of these before giving up. The first one would Work once, then stick at the bottom and just spin without advancing up the shaft to engage the motor. I would pry it up with my fingers, then it would work once & stick upon disengaging, so in effect you would need the motor cover off each time you wanted to start the motor. The second one was a little bit better. It would work OK the first start of the day, then stick. Taking the motor cover off in a rocking boat is not fun !!! I believe the problem is that the machining at the bottom of the pinion is botched up at the very bottom (see pictures of OEM, the 1st I received, & the 2nd I received). My OEM motor had a groove machined around the base of the main shaft to keep the pinion from binding where the machining was irregular. I've seen some people recommend putting washers at the bottom to space the pinion up a little, and that may work fine, but I didn't want to mess around with disassembly & home-made "fixes".
