I tried to teach myself to play the flute a few years ago. It didn’t work out since I seemed unable to get a consistent tone. I put it away. But I recently came across it and thought I might try again. This is what is called an “open hole” flute (as in five of the keys have openings in the center. There are explanations about why this is done (many flutes do NOT have open holes) but that doesn’t matter. A friend suggested to me that sealing the holes might make the initial attempt to learn just a bit easier. As it is, with the open hole, if the pad of the finger does not completely cover the hole, the tone will be compromised or simply won’t make any musical sound (unless a blowing sound is music to you).So when I came across these silicone hole plugs I thought I would give it a try.Could I then suddenly play the flute like an angel and now contemplate a career as a flutist? Well, not so much. Only time and continued effort will tell.But the plugs fit snugly into the holes and were very easy to put in place. They certainly seem to have effectively stopped the flow of air through the holes. This should make precise fingering not so much of an issue. The plugs do what they were made to do. They seem to be well made and consistent in their size and shape. I feel like they will give me a slightly better chance of success.Made well, good fit, easy to install. I recommend them.Sometimes you just have to pucker up and persevere. Let the music come!
