About this item

  • Works with surrounding ambient light.
  • Captures details lost in shadows.
  • Lowers contrast evenly throughout image.
  • No flare or halation.

The Ultra Contrast Filter uses the surrounding ambient light, not just light in the image area, to evenly lighten shadows throughout. Use it where contrast control is needed without any other effect on sharpness or highlight flare being apparent. Tiffen was recognized with a Technical Achievement Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for the innovative design of this popular Motion Picture and TV filter.

You can see some improvement in the shadows, but still can't help much with the highlights. I would use it more as an effect than a solution for high contrast situations.

A fun almost like real fog filter. I keep it with my Pro-Mist filters as it similar but stronger!

What this does is darkens ONLY the BRIGHT SPOTS in a photo. Why would you want to do that?Think about this problem you always run into outdoor photography: You have a nice, sunny day, with deep, dark shadows. Now you have a dilemma on your hands. You can either darken down the settings and get the landscape with a black blob, or lighten it up and get the bunny rabbit but let the background blow out. With one of these on your lens, you can get BOTH! (Within reason.)That's the reason I started out by leaving this on my outdoor zoom lens all the time. Soon I found that I even liked it on my 50mm indoor lens to tone down the glare from light fixtures. (Wow! I can get the Christmas light and the tree at the same time!)

Un filtro fantástico que aumenta un poco el rango dinámico de cámaras a las que no se les puede modificar mucho los perfiles de imagen. El único problema es que al tratar de hacer un contraluz creará una doble sombra. Hay que saber usarlo.

Originally bought the 5 strength version but it turned out to be a little too strong. I think this is near perfect. I use for video work on my Panasonic GX7.Pros:Spreads incoming light around the image which lifts shadows and rolls off highlights more nicely.Due to the spread of light, the colours are spread more evenly too. It creates a more balanced and pleasingly coloured image. If you have a light source at the edge of the frame (such as a fire or neon sign), the light will leak into the image and give a nice coloured vignette-type thing.Cons*I think* it reduces sharpness slightly. Not recommended for shooting into the sun. You lose all detail in any shadowed areas and the resultant image just looks unnatural. If the light source at the side is too strong (such as the sun) it will haze up the image greatly. And not in a nice way. It just whitewashes the image.Overall I highly recommend this filter. It gives a filmic look to not-so filmic cameras like the one I have. Just don't use it when shooting the sun. Buy a lens hood for occasions where a strong light source from the side may haze the image too much.https://vimeo.com/110432707

This filter uses ambient light to fill shadows.PROS: Easy way to reduce apparent contrast. Produces less halation than typical "low contrast" filters.CONS: The effect is inconsistent. More color noise in shadows. No coatings. Relatively expensive.

The filter did as described and fits perfectly. I needed to raise the crushed blacks on a DSLR to match for multicam project and it worked beautifully.

When the dynamic range is just too wide, this filter attenuates the highlights while capturing details in the shadows. Works well both for normal post-processing and HDR post-processing. One word of caution: avoid shooting into the light (both directly and when the light source is just outside of the scene).

Does what it says: lowers scene contrast. What more could you ask for? Besides one for each size you own. Remember flashing your film to compress your palette? This is that for digital. Instantly.Try it out with raw files for single shot HDR effects. It doesn't bring your highlights down much (maybe 1/3 stop) but it brings your shadows way up. This is one of the few times I'd suggest shooting at a higher bit depth. You'll have more room for manipulation in post that way.
