Just need to make sure there is sufficient line tension on the wheel. You need tension on the spool first of all to keep it in check while loading your reel. This should suffice to make the counter to be accurate to a higher degree.

Counter is Junk! Not even remotley accurate. Spooled out 6 foot of line and counter showed 2 foot. I bought 2 of them and both were equally worthless.
