Although it seems like a great product, It is faster and more efficient to slice the bread with a simple cutting board and serrated knife. I feel that this is overpriced for the end result.I bake sourdough bread weekly and I thought this cutting board would be a great addition to my bread supplies. However, after using it, it’s easier to just use a regular cutting board. At $42.99, I feel like this is very over priced. The cutting board seems to be made out of bamboo and feels sturdy. The edge pieces are bowed, but they still fit in the grooves. All edges are smooth and don’t have any splinters. The pieces can be stored inside the tray when not in use. I found it difficult to remove the inner piece of the tray to dust out the crumbs because there are no notches to lift it out. There are no instructions for washing, but I wasn’t going to use this “dirty” straight from amazon so I hand washed it and it dried quickly.I used this with a 7 inch round sourdough loaf, so I adjusted the side panels so it would be a tighter fit. Even at that, it was very difficult to slice the bread. For one, the stop plate does not stay put when installed as the instruction sheet shows. The notch that it sits in isn't deep enough to support the stop plate in a vertical position so it shifts backwards and creates a gap. I had better luck moving the stop plate forward in between the slats to better hold it in place. When you are slicing the bread, there's not enough room to move your knife back and forth because the handle of the knife hits the side panel not allowing you to push the knife forward any more. Also, I feel like I'm using a pretty standard size serrated knife but it barely sticks out on the other side panel. When you go to “saw” the bread, the knife shifts and just stabs the side panel rather than going through the slats. I ended up slicing the bamboo many times instead of the bread. This left large gouge marks in the base. I'm not elderly or arthritic, but it hurt my hands pretty bad to try and use this bread slicer. It was a great idea, but it good use some improvements to make it more functional.Areas where I think this could improve:-The base plate needs to have deeper slats so that the knife can cut through the bread all the way through, I ended up having to finish cutting my bread on my own normal cutting board.-The notches need to be deeper for better support of the panels-An additional stop plate would be helpful to firmly hold the bread in place while slicing from all sides.- Perhaps an included “slicer” that you can insert from the top to cut the bread would work better than trying to use a knife cutting the bread from the side.

I bake a lot of artisan and sourdough breads so was hoping this would be the perfect bread slicer. While the concept is good, there are some practical aspects that fall short for me. There is almost 1/4-inch of literal wiggle room on each of the slicing boards when they are installed so even with the stop plate attached there is still some movement. If the loaf is slightly smaller than the width of slicer, the bread can move when it is being sliced. You need a Very Sharp knife with a Very Thin blade and Very Steady hands to avoid nicking the cutting guides.I tried this with a loaf of crusty sourdough and, as another reviewer mentioned, it was difficult to cut through the bottom of the loaf. After some experimentation, I resolved that the best use of this slicer for the types of bread I bake is to slice through the top of the loaf using the guides, then remove the guides and slice all the way through the bread if I want even slices. The description says that it is wood, but doesn't specify what type of wood. My guess is that it is bamboo, based on the ridge marks that can easily be seen across the wood grain in several places. Looking at the top of the guides it is easy to see three layers of wood, two outer and an inner layer that is a slightly different color. I also included a photo showing some of the wood splintering between the guides which was taken before I tried to slice bread. The outer surface is very smooth, so I have no complaints with it.All in all it is a good idea, but it needs a bit of refinement.
