About this item

  • Thermostat automatically adjusts the amount of water entering radiator according to the temperature of cooling water, changing the circulation range of water to adjust the cooling capacity of cooling system to ensure engine works in a suitable temperature range so that effectively control the emissions engine produces.
  • If main valve of thermostat is opened too late, it will cause engine to overheat; if main valve is opened too early, engine warm-up time will be prolonged and engine temperature will be too low. Making it a critical component in the vehicle, coolant thermostat housing assembly with stuck or closed shut should be removed for replacement or repair.
  • This Thermostat Housing Fits the Following Vehicles: For 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012 2013 Mini Cooper R55 R56 R57 1.6L; For 2011 2012 2013 Mini Cooper Countryman 1.6L.Opening Temperature : 105 °C; Number of Connectors : 2-Pin.
  • Customers can find the product you need accurately according to the OE number. OE part number: 11 53 7 534 521, 11537534521, 11538699290, 11 53 8 699 290, 1336.Z6, 1336Z6, 902-812, 902812.

What is it?

Thermostat in your car or truck helps regulate the engine’s temperature by controlling the flow of coolant to and from the engine. It sits inside a thermostat housing connected by hoses to the engine on one side and the radiator on the other. It can be found between the vehicle’s engine and radiator. The most common problem with automotive thermostats is that the valve becomes stuck in either the open or closed position due to the wax binding up, debris becoming caught in the valve, or simple corrosion or wear.

Thermostat housing acts as a cover for a vehicle’s thermostat and protects it from harm while also preventing coolant from leaking out. It was once primarily made of metal, but in more recent years manufacturers have opted to make these housings out of plastic instead to allow for easier manufacturing of complex designs while also lowering costs. However, the plastic housings can become brittle from heat and break due to over tightening fasteners or hoses upon installation.

Work on the cooling system should only be carried out when the engine has cooled down.

Remove coolant pressure cap from expansion tank. Remove intake filter housing.

Drain coolant.

Remove your air intake tube and MAP sensor connector. Remove cold air intake tube which is below the intake tube that you just removed.

Disconnect battery and remove ECU. Once the cover is removed, remove the connectors marrying the ECU to the harness.

Remove wiring cover.

Disconnect vacuum hoses. Disconnect thermostat housing electrical connections. Disconnect radiator, heater core and turbo hoses.

Remove and replace thermostat housing with the gasket.

Reattach the radiator and heater core hoses.

Push the housing's electrical connections back in. They will actually be much easier to push back in until you hear and feel the click.

Replace the two vacuum hoses.

Bundle the wires together and replace that plastic cover, which snaps back on so much easier than it was pulling it off.

Reconnect bottom front connection to the ECU and get a new zip tie to secure it.

Plug the top connections back into the ECU.

Reinstall cover to the ECU.

Reinstal lower cold air intake tube, make sure you reconnect the electrical connection.

Reinstal upper air intake tube, and the elbow and reconnect the electrical plug.

Reconnect lower radiator hose.

Refill your coolant reservoir with the correct type and amount of fluid.

Reinstal negative terminal cable to your battery.

Leave radiator overflow cap off and start the car, letting it idle for about 10 to 15 minutes to bleed any air out of the system. Refill coolant as necessary.

2010 Cooper S - Fit perfect, part appears to be made well. Been on for a week with no issues.

Thermostat housing and gasket seem to fit and work well (obviously a pain to put in but that is mini design rather than the part) - the thermostat sensor however just threw an engine code today [a little less than 2 months after install] showing it's broken. The scan tool defined the engine code and I unplugged and re-plugged the wiring. The seller shows a 24 month warranty (an answer to customers question) but where/how? The warranty link says "Please contact the seller directly for warranty information for this product. You may also be able to find warranty information on the manufacturer’s website." nothing here on the product page or Benefast's amazon page - besides not being able to drive the car while waiting.

While this part did not fit my car, I have since learned that I only needed to buy an adapter for about $45 from the Mini Cooper dealer. Apparently that was all that was needed to get the part working. The part got updated so they made an adapter you can buy separately. Unfortunately the repair shop did not no this so I will end up taking the car to the mini dealer to get them to repair this. For something like this I almost wish I had actually just gone to them first. Would have saved a lot of money from the repair shop in labor and parts to not have it work. Plus, I can get it done in one shot instead of buying the part and waiting on the repair shop to get it done.

I did not install this thermostat so I have no idea if it is any good. I gave 5 stars because it looks study and well made. Now the reason why I did not install – the connectors for two sensors on the thermostat housing looked different from what I have. I went to a local supplier and was told the shape of the connectors are different depending what month of 2013 the car was manufactured. If you are buying this item for a 2013 cooper, check the shape of the sensor connectors on your car and compare it to the pictures first. Just one needs to be checked as the two have same shape. Mine is oval shaped while this item has rounded rectangle shape.

Product was as described and was a direct replacement for faulty part. Outside of the pain in the butt clip on the outlet under the manifold went in like a charm.

Installed this product with no issues, Gasket holds in place during install with on issues. Talked to customer support on an issue I had, and they are very responsive and will work to correct any issues. One note is with these pressurized cooling systems, you have to get all the air out of the system or you will still receive an error code. This might take a couple of longer drives to warm up and get all the water moving.
