The bolts are a tad (1/128") under 1/2" in diameter, and the square section under the head is 1/2" square with a depth of about 1/4". The bolt takes a 3/4" or 19mm wrench. The carriage washers are 1 1/2" in diameter. The "ruspert" coating is a triple-layer affair, with zinc in the inside, a bonding layer and baked ceramic on the outside, and it's thought to be better than galvanization for use in pressure-treated wood and generally for corrosion issues. One issue with carriage bolts is the need to cut a square hole into the top. There's no other way of holding the screw to tighten the bolt, and if you don't recess the top, normal working strain might pull the square head into the hole and loosen the whole construction. I did this by drilling the 1/2" hole and using a chisel to square out the hole, pretty easy, and I also tried hammering the head into the hole. OK, but a metal hammer damages the coating. I think I'll get a square hole punch when I get to using a lot of these carriage bolts. I did not try using these on metal, squaring those holes sounds like they need expensive tools. My upcoming job uses pressure-treated 4X4s and I think these carriage bolts will be ideal for that job.Despite the softer, low-carbon steel, these carriage bolts should be ideal for 4X4 and pressure-treated wood.

Wow, read that other guy's review, they knocked it out of the park. I'm not qualified to analyze coatings, all I can say is that there's black paint on some of the surfaces, and a total lack of rust on the other surfaces, so the the coatings are doing their job.The bolts are a little "rough", there's tiny dents and dings all along the edges of the threads, and the movement of the nut is clearly not smooth. The dings don't interfere with the nut, they just make the turning a little rough. We're going to use these to repair the overhead garage door, they should work well and the smooth heads will look nice.
