these are rough cast, the molds have to be ground to smooth the surface and clean up the bad casting. Typical though, I haven't seen any finished ones, just these sand cast types painted to hide the imperfections. they shouldn't be painted as one is casting 1600 degree or so metal. Takes about a week with the dremel and a few grinder bits to smooth it up right.

I have used this several times now so thought I'd write a review. The item is pretty straight forward cast metal wire ingot. I use it to cast sterling silver for custom jewelry. I like the longer size of these as it means the finished wire are longer and can be used for multiple pieces. I will say the cavities are pretty rough right out of the box. I think the manufacturer should have done some sanding prior to adding the black paint to these and they would have been better. Of course, they are very inexpensive that time is money. I did the finish sanding myself and it results in much cleaner cast wire. I use this wire with a Durston rolling mill to make custom jewelry stock and it is working well. One tip is to be sure to heat the cavity before you pour your molten silver. If you don't preheat the cavity... you tend to get poorly filled out wire which will cause problems when running it thru a mill. Also remember that handle will get very hot when you pour molten metal into the cavity so protective gloves are a must. I'd say this was worth the cost but expect to do some sanding to get the cavity smoothed out prior to use. It took me about 10minutes to get mine to the level of smoothness I wanted so not a big deal to me.
