The achillies heel of this thing is the retaining clip that holds it all together. It should be made of high-tensile, spring steel, but it is not. As others have mentioned this "bearing" does not come pre-lubricated (and will burn out quickly without it) but to put any grease in it you must remove the retaining clip - which bends easily and doesn't even stay on while holding it in your hand after putting it back on. This is part 1. If you the right size retaining spring clip you maybe can make it work. Problem 2 is that the grooves for the spring clip are only about as deep as the thickness of a hair so there's literally nothing for it to bite onto even if it was the right clip. So if you also happen to have a lathe and a steel bit you can mill the groove to the proper depth and then add a real retaining clip and then it's good to go. If you think buying a Stihl factory replacement bearing instead of this one will fix your problems, I hate to break it to you, but it's the exact same one, with the exact same problems. I recommend stay away from the Stilh FS-40/50 family altogether unless you have a machine shop to fix the terrible bearing design.

This bearing housing fits perfectly on my Stihl FS45C trimmer. It is identical to the piece I took out of my trimmer. For those who might be curious, the replacement trimmer head I bought here on Amazon is a perfect fit on this bearing. A good combination for the FS45C trimmer.

Extremely easy to install, fit perfectly, don't forget to stuff a bunch of grease in the screw hole. My FS38 is back in action.

Product is a good replacement for the factory bearing in my Stihl F-45 weed trimmer that failed after many years of use. Time will tell how long this one will last.

My old spindle snapped and I had the new one very quickly. If you can change the string on your trimmer this is an easy repair. It has been working great, with no issues.

Direct replacement for the original bearing housing. Ive run the trimmer for or 5 times since i replaced it with no apparent issues. As some other reviews noted, disassemble and grease it before installing it.

I'm sure I already reviewed this. Anyway, you have to fill it with grease, otherwise easy installation. Lasted all last summer and still good. I'll do anything to stay away from the Stihl yuppee boutique.
