My stepdad watches a lot of tv. It's become tradition to join him in watching pre-recorded shows on DirectTV in the evenings when we visit from out of state. This summer, we've been watching a lot of Gunsmoke and Wagon Train. But we were missing snippets of the storyline every time he fast-forwarded through commercials because the buttons on the remote kept sticking. No one remembers just how old his "old" remotes were, but I'll tell you this—they looked ancient. 10x more yellow than white with fading buttons and battery compartments held in place by tape... And I'm pretty sure he'd completely forgotten what it *should* feel like to use a remote. His buttons were stiff and temperamental, but no doubt the changes occurred so slowly over the course of months and years that he never noticed how far from "normal" things bad gotten.I ordered two replacements (one for the living room and one for the bedroom) as a surprise from Amazon. The units arrived within 3 days, well packaged, and including batteries. They are shockingly white compared to the old guys (I could do nothing but laugh when I laid a new remote next to an old and saw just how discolored the old ones were). The new remotes feel a bit lighter, but maybe that's just my imagination. The covers on the battery compartments definitely slide more easily (yet stay tightly closed once in place). And the buttons are a dream: easy to push and very responsive. In short, the difference between his old remotes and these replacements is like night and day!No, this isn't anything beyond what should be expected from new remotes. But hey, they are exactly what they should be, and that's worth noting.I also love that the new remotes came with little stickers to label each remote as "bedroom," "living room," etc. and indicate which HDMI input the DirectTV Genie is connected to. (My stepdad won't need labels, but I can see them coming in handy during the holidays when dozens of family members tend to invade my mom's otherwise well-organized household.)Moral of the story: Check your folks' remotes, people! If they are showing their age (the remotes, I mean), treat them to a replacement. It's a simple, quick, and inexpensive upgrade that may be long overdue.
