Electric Guitar Nut

I recently ordered the Electric Guitar Bone Nuts for a new 6-string guitar that I am building. This bone nut is constructed with cattle bone, and it is a good replacement if you have a nut that is worn out or if you need to replace any inferior plastic nut. After installing the nut and testing the guitar with the strings on, you may need to file the slots to fit your string sizes. I usually use 9-gauge super slinky strings, so the nut was a perfect fit, but if you use a larger string gauge, you may need to make some adjustments. A little tip I suggest is using just a small dab of wood glue to hold the nut in place; many people use too much glue or superglue, which is unnecessary and can make it hard to replace the nut at a later date. Overall, this nut works well and is a vast improvement over a plastic nut.

These bone nuts were a little bit thicker than what I was replacing, on a Leo Jaymz DIY guitar kit. I had to sand them a little with sandpaper. They do fit, after sanding a little. Are they better than plastic? I have no idea. They needed a little work, but it was good for learning.

Good product, appears to be genuine bone with smoothly cut slots for strings. The thin profile is definitely more suited to strat and tele style guitars, maybe certain acoustic models, although I haven't yet installed one to find out how well it fits without modification. Experience tells me to expect sound quality and tuning stability to be on par with other bone nut products but again, I haven't installed this one yet to find out. It would definitely be an improvement over plastic nuts.

Close, but not quite right. I measured these replacement nuts against two different strats - a 1989 American standard, and a 2024 squire. The OG strat nuts measure 42.3mm wide, whereas these replacement nuts measure 42mm. Not a big difference. Where it gets worse is the distance between the slots - the OG strat nuts measure 7.7mm from slot to slot, whereas the replacement nuts measure a mere 6.9mm. The OG strat nuts measure 35.2mm from low E slot to high E slot, whereas these replacement nuts measure 33.5 for that same distance. So, overlaying the replacements over the OG nuts the strings are visibly closer together on the replacement nut. Which makes forming chords a bit harder to accomplish.I personally wouldn’t consider these nuts as a replacement for a strat, due to these spacing differences. However, I did find that these would likely work well on my mustang, my old musicmaster, and could likely work pretty well on my telecaster, based on comparisons I did. I have no way to verify that these are bone, but they are definitely hard and sound like bone when dropped on granite. Despite the spacing issues, these are well made. So although they aren’t a match for the strats I intended them for, they still could be used for certain specific guitars with a narrower neck at the nut.

A friend of mine picked up a cheap strat copy at a thrift store for $10 and the only thing I could find that was wrong was the broken nut and the really nasty strings. I didn't want to hassle with making a nut for it from scratch, then I found these nuts already pre-shaped and notched. Popped the old nut out, had to sand just a hair of thickness and she dropped in the nut slot like it was meant to be. The length was perfect, the height was perfect and even the string height at the first fret was perfect! New set of strings and he now has a great guitar that he can give to his daughter when she is old enough. Since they come in packs of 2, I now have a spare resting quietly in my spare parts box in case I ever run across another strat copy that needs a new nut.

This is real bone, so it's a nice upgrade from stock plastic nuts. This fit well into a Glarry frankenstrat I'm building. Before you buy, you might check how strongly your existing nut is held in, since that was a big problem I struggled with--Glarry nuts must get extra glue at the factory! But the size was perfect for dropping in, so it was easy. Can you hear the difference with gain and effects and all the rest? Not really. It's about getting that extra 5% out of the instrument--a little more sustain and clarity for open chords, mainly. But it's cheap and pretty easy once you get the old nut out. I am happy with my new nut!

Another reviewer mentioned some question about whether these are really bone. I share that question - I really couldn't tell, even after filing down one of the nuts. The nuts have several things going for them: mine were slotted appropriately (can be a huge frustration when something is even fractions of a millimeter off), and had a decent fit in the nut slot of a Squier Strat. Radius matched the FB well. I work on many guitars, so I didn't really delve into measurements - I just found a guitar that needed a new nut and this was appropriate. Most appreciated was having the starter slots in the right spots: I filed it down with nut files, and that process went well. I would suggest that if you are not into filing a nut slot, these may not be for you. But I like how they arrived; I could adjust to the appropriate depth for the guitar. When one considers the price point (and I do, for small consumable parts like this), these are very appealing. Recommended.

I can't make up my mind whether these are real bone or not. The flex like plastic, yet the texture does appear to be bleached bone. No signs of plastic in terms of molding imprints etc, just cnc machine marks. Given the flex, it's not good bone even if it is. Either way, not recommended. A name brand bone nut from Fender is only a few dollars more and much, much, more nicely shaped.
