These things seem well made and get the job done. They're not astonishingly strong on flimsy metal (the little sculpture in my picture was about the limit before they'd swing/tip/flop…) but they're strong enough. And I suspect if you were using them on some nice plate steel they'd be even better.

These classic welding magnets make a firm connection to iron and mild steel. Be smarter than me though and don't assume your other working metals like aluminum, stainless steel, copper and mixed alloys are magnetic.I have a few materials that are semi-magnetic and they stick to a magnetic when making contact. But they don't stick very well when the magnet is an eighth of an inch away, which is how these recessed magnetic brackets are designed. I think they would benefit from a wider range of use and materials compatibility if they allowed the magnets to make contact with the workpiece.They do work great for what they are designed for.

I ordered these welding magnets to use in my home shop. They are definitely a lighter/cheaper quality than other ones I have used, but they get the job done. Minus one star for lower quality.
