What is it?

Transfer Case Shift Motor is a part of some vehicle’s four-wheel drive (4WD) system and is responsible for switching between the vehicle's different two and four-wheel drive options.

It is a small electric motor that moves parts within the transfer case itself to activate the various modes of the 4WD system.

How to replace the Transfer Case Shift Motor?

Transfer case shift motor is fairly easy to access and replacing it is within the reach of the do-it-yourselfer.

You may have to remove the front driveshaft in order to access the shift motor.

In order to remove the shift motor and install the new one, you’ll need to get the transfer case shifted into its neutral position.

You should be able to do this by turning the transfer case shift shaft with a crescent wrench.

Other than that, you’ll just need to disconnect the electrical connections, unbolt the old shift motor, and bolt on and reconnect the new one.

I'd gotten the "Brake-ABS-4x4" trifecta of lights on my 2009 BMW X3 a couple of times. Usually go off after a shutdown and restart. Never noticed any drivability issues. Watching YouTube videos I tried rotating the plastic gear in the Transfer Case Actuator but that didn't fix it. Wife got worried every time the lights came on so I broke down and splurged on this actuator assembly. Looks exactly like the BMW OEM part and fixed my problem. Been in the car for a year now and lights have never retuned. The lower "easy to install" rating is not the parts fault, it is BMW's fault for making it a bit of a pain but not impossible. Probably saved $1000 doing this myself rather than at BMW (which is 300 miles away!)

had to use my original motor with the new gear casing that I purchased. Because the vehicle computer doesn't recognize the purchased motor.

The part installed easy enough. Had to reuse the old screws as the new screws were a different size torx head. the plastic ground connector broke while trying to reconnect the wire. I had to remove the connector from the original one, and install it using the small torx screw, to this unit.Other than these it feels similar in weight and finish. I did open my original one up, and change the gear. Keeping it in case this fails somewhere down the road. Because of the Ground connector, I am giving this 3 stars. It has been a few weeks, without an issue, I will update the review if something goes wrong in the next 6 months.

Works great so far, has been in use for a month on a 2008 BMW X3. fits and connects like the original part. For my vehicle I did not have to do any recalibrate or recoding.
