After slightly flattening the sole, honing the blade and adjusting the hole for the handle, this plane is amazing. I'm just an amateur and I really enjoy using this plane compared to the Stanley No. 4 clones that you find all over Amazon. Once you have this plane set up, adjusting it is pretty easy and it shaves really smoothly.

I tested it out of the box, it cuts well. The chip breaker has some rust, that might be due to long storage without oil. Also the handle is very loose. Once it is snug, one side is a lot longer than the other. I saw these Chinese planes usually have equal handle length on both sides as they are used to push the plane. I do not know if it is a defect on my plane or it was designed like that. I plan to use some thin wood wedges to snug it up.The bottom sole is not very flat and that can be smoothed on fine sandpaper.I can see the blade has two small nicks after about dozen or so strokes on southern yellow pine so do not know about the steel quality. I will sharpen it before using it.Overall, it is a good plane. If I can solve the handle issue, I might get another one.

All planes take some work. To make this usable the back of blade must be flattened. Because of the high quality steel, this takes time. Rush it with a grinder/ belt sander and you can over heat the blade, and loose the hardening. So dip the blade frequently in water if using a grinder. Once the blade is flat, it needs to be sharpened. See numerous videos on youtube. If new to this I suggest a honing guide. After the blade is ready, install it in the body and wedge it in. Make sure the blade does not stick out of the mouth yet, because we need to flatten the sole of the plane. I used 80 &150 grit sand paper for this. After the sole is flat. we must ensure each side is square. I glued sand paper to a vertical surface to sand the sides. After both sides are square it can be used, but I refinished it first with my favorite oil.If all these steps are done, and the edge maintained well, this can leave a very good surface on your work pieces.
