Literally arrived in a bag of oil to prevent them from rusting during shipping, I guess? Would have loved a warning before opening it. After I wiped them off, I used them during a pottery throwing session and it immediately rusted after 30 min of use(not submerged in water or clay), red spots everywhere and strong metal smell. Definitely not rustproof unless covered in oil 24/7.

I ordered these calipers. to help me measure physical dimensions of internal diameters and external dimensions of round, rounded or unusually shaped 3-dimensional objects. These types of tools have been around for thousands of years. No surprises here.I like that the tools are made from stainless steel which should prevent rusting. In many cases, inexpensive tools such as this are made from plain steel which rusts easily. Even if you keep it dry. So, you end up having to oil them to keep them as rust free as possible. These calipers are small and made to measure small objects. For example, the outside diameter of a 3 3/8" coffee cup is easy to measure. You could also measure the wall thickness with the same tool.Similarly, using the internal caliper the inside diameter of the same cup can be measured at 3 1/4" at the lip and then measured again at points further down the side walls to confirm the tapered dimension at the bottom. Thes may be important dimensions to a potter. So, these are good, solid, simple tools that do the job. They are a little stiff to move but that's actually a good thing as the hold the measured size as you put a ruler between the points to get an accurate numerical value. These tools are accurate probably to a 1/16" maybe 1/32". If you need better accuracy there are better tools for both jobs. These offer fairly coarse measurements. The tools are small, thin, lightweight and made from stainless steel. They should be the only ones of this size I ever need in this size. Again, no surprises - works as expected for an economical tool.

These calipers are very hard to open or close, which is the point: they will not move in your hand after a measurement while you are transferring measurement. Arrived well preserved in grease and paper.
