My original review appears below, but I wanted to add an important update: I'm lowering the rating to 3 stars because of stretching of the web belt. It has stretched so much I now use it on its shortest adjustment length to use it as needed. If it stretches much more, it may not work equally with some peoples barrels. It's a shame, because it was a nice, useful idea and the metal ends are super-tough.~~~~~Coincidentally, I didn’t know a product like this existed, yet I had my first racoon visitor only 2 weeks ago and have been dealing with an awkward bungee-setup ever since. These are nice, heavy straps with heavy steel fingers on either end. The straps are stretchy so you can unhook them without having to readjust the length of the strap. Good design. I don’t know that these will hold up to a bear, but they should easily thwart my occasional racoon visitor. They are long enough to reach the bottom grab bar on my 96G bin.It seems as though a single strap would be sufficient for my needs, though I note the seller’s photos show 2 used per can. There were no directions included or other info about whether to use 2 per can or not.

I got this lock to prevent racoons from getting into my trash barrel. We have city barrels so I didn’t want anything I have to drill. This was perfect. I somehow missed that it was elastic but that worked out even better. I have a nylon one with a ratchet and it gets annoying taking on and off. This one the hook and band is heavy duty. The hooks clip easily onto my barrel edges or handle. Being elastic I can stretch it over tight enough to block the raccoon and keep the lid tightly shut but still easy enough to put on and take off. I’m definitely getting another for my other barrel and ditching the ratchet one.

`***FAIR and OPEN DISCLOSURE***[this is a personal review of a product received free of charge as part of my participation in the "Amazon Vine" program: this fact has in no way influenced my evaluation of this product, nor have I been influenced or coerced by either the manufacturers, marketers, promoters, etc. of the product in question to ascribe to it anything other than my own honest and unbiased opinions]______________________Just your basic wide elastic strap with hooks on each end and an adjustable tightening buckle. Seems well-built enough to withstand the elements and perhaps even the occasional tenacious varmint. With this being a "one-piece" order, it should be sufficient enough deterrent for your smaller nuisance critters... anything more sizable, and you may need to consider a "duo-pack". Just a word of forethought though: if this is something you're thinking of ordering for someone as a gift, don't make it a "surprise" gift, as there is absolutely NO indication whatsoever on or inside the packaging identifying what the product is or how it's meant to be used -- it just comes contained in a tiny clear bag without even any logo or label identifying its content... so it would be a good idea to let whomever you plan on "gifting" this to a heads-up in advance, so they'll know exactly what it was you sent to them and avoid any guessing or confusion.~ "Ace of Stars" ~

These things are such a neat idea. I live in a windy area and have a lot of outdoor cats that took up residence at our house. Both of these have led to dozens of times where my yard was littered with trash because a lid flew open and the cats dug into trash bags. Well, this about destroys every opportunity the might have from now on. The straps are honestly overbuilt for their job. There is plenty of fabric, and the hooks are large and coated in a bed liner like material. The only time I'm going to worry from now on is on trash night because I can't leave these on when the truck comes, either the lid won't open or the strap will be lost. Neither of those are good. If they made one side attach permanently while the other had a hook, that might be the only way these could be better.

Excellent for keeping bears out, now if I could only get my garbage men to not fling it in the grass on garbage day. I purchased this for my mom who lives right near the woods. Bears are continuously going on a rampage throughout the Twighlight hours of the night. I purchased this style for her specifically because she didn't want to have to drill holes in her garbage can. The morning after using the strap, my mom was pleasantly surprised to see that she didn't have to go around picking up garbage straps. Unfortunately her neighbor (without one) wasn't as lucky.

This strap is great! The squirrels and raccoons seem to be showing up in droves lately, and this strap has prevented them from snacking on our trash! It's easy to use and really effective. The price is well worth not cleaning up garbage that's spread around the yard! We had at least one bear visit last year and destroy our cans. I'm hoping that using this will make our can less attractive. We need to get more!

I ordered these straps for a different reason than most people! Instead of trying to keep animals from taking garbage out, I am trying to prevent humans from putting garbage in!Let me explain. We have an Airbnb house located next to our home that I help manage. Here in So California, we have three types of garbage cans: grey (garbage), blue (recycle) and green (organics). So often, guests at the Airbnb throw garbage in the organics can, which is meant for grass cuttings, leaves, weeds etc. I am tired of having to pull the garbage out and put it in the proper can. I am hoping this strap will deter them from using the green can!It went on the can easily and fits snuggly. It is also easy to remove but hopefully deters the guests! However, I feel sure it would keep animals, even raccoons out of a garbage can.
