This is an excellent set of trains and cars, lots of variety and great build quality - our toddler has been banging them around plenty and they are still absolutely fine.They have the gauge and magnets that make them compatible with a lot of other sets on the market, though they might feel a little smaller.I haven’t tried painting any of them yet, but they offer very few details - which is honestly what you want if you’re turning a child loose on them with paint anyway. You would want to prime them first to ensure it lasts, but if that is not important to you you can just go for it with acrylic paints and either let the paint chip from play or cover it back up as needed.

These unpainted, unfinished DIY wooden train cars are great for making a custom paint set of train cars that are different from the ones that you can buy. That way, that custom train car set will be truly one of a kind. Here are some details you might want to know:1) The wood accepts paint quite well. Meaning that the paint you apply will stick to the wood without flaking or coming off. The amount of paint that comes off will be dependent on whether you intentionally scratch or use force to get it off. In my experience, there was no need to use primer before applying paint.2) The magnetic joints are as strong or stronger than those found on regular magnetic train cars. I did not require a lot of force to separate the train cars, nor did I use that little force to separate them. If pulled by a battery operated train engine, these unpainted, unfinished DIY wooden train cars should remain intact and not unintentionally separate.Overall, I do recommend this unpainted, unfinished DIY wooden train cars because it allowed me to make a truly custom train car set that I can pass onto the next generation.

I purchased these for a train themed birthday party activity. All the kids got to paint their own train and take it home as a favor. The quality was great! We got lots of compliments on the activity and people asking where we got the trains from. I actually was originally going to purchase similar ones from hobby lobby because the price per train was a little lower, but the shipping would have taken too long.
