The new synthetic materialNew Nylgut ("synthetic gut") has the same acoustic properties as gut - but without its typical defects - (high cost, limited duration and high instability under varying climatic). Nylgut has precisely these qualities: allowing one, on the one hand, to rediscover the sonorities familiar to the great 19th and 20th century masters; and guaranteeing, on the other, a stability of tuning higher even than that of the best gut and nylon strings.

These essentially turn your uke into a nylon string mandola. It's turned my uke into my favorite instrument to just pick up and casually noodle around with.

I had an Islander concert uke that I don't normally play. I didn't care for the strings on it (Fremont Blacks...which sound good but too thin of a feel) and didn't have a real need for it. It was in the "should sell" pile when I thought I'd throw some strings on to play in 5ths. No problems installing and it sounds *really* good now! It's been fun learning how to play it. Great tone range, the strings feel good, and the chords sound nice and full! I just ordered a Pepe Romero ST Concert, which has the overall length of a soprano, the body size of a tenor, and the scale length of a concert. I will be buying another set of these strings for it. Truly travel-sized and the large body should give an even greater full sound!

I love the low mellow tones these strings provide on my tenor ukulele. (They work well on a concert or tenor ukulele) It sounds so fantastic. They have a great ringing quality that everyone marvels at. I did not like the high pitched “plinky” sound of a standard high G ukulele. A low G is better, but still does not come close to the quality sounds these strings give. Some people may like the typical Hawaiian sound of the standard ukulele, but for those who love the sound of a viola or tenor guitar - these strings are sure to please. I also love the wide range of low to high pitches I can get - great for full rich chords while still being able to play those high pitches in the upper positions. I’ve played violin for 50 years and loved how I could just pick it up and PLAY immediately because of being familiar with the fifths tuning. I Strongly recomend these strings! (Incidently, some ads for this product may be a little misleading - saying that you can tune your ukulele like a violin. This is not exactly true. It is like a violin in that you will have the G, D and A strings tuned in fifths, but you won’t have the high E string. And you also will get a Low C string (a fifth lower than a violin G) Some people tried to tune the A up to an E and complained when it broke. When tuned as they are meant to be tuned C3-G3-D4-A4, they won’t break and are marvelous sounding.

I bought this pack only to replace the C string. In 6 months the winding on the string started to fray and one month later it snapped. 7 months for a string that is only used once or twice a week is not very good. Needless to say I am disappointed.

Tried to tune these strings to violin/mandolin pitches as it claims is possible in the description and the highest string broke instantly. I bet these are intended for the tener guitar pitches C3-G3-D4-A4, not the violin/mandolin pitches G3-D4-A4-E5.

My instrument by preference has always been the guitar, until I started learning the mandolin, maybe half a decade ago. Nowadays I probably split my time evenly between the two. Some months ago I bought a ukulele just to try it out, and although it is a fun instrument, I have found it hard to take it seriously, until I discovered this sets of strings where you can tune the ukulele in fifths, like a mandolin. This particular set is intended for the concert ukulele and the tuning is like that of a mandola/viola, CGDA. I ordered a set, and that changed my view of the ukulele entirely. From it having been more or less a toy with a rattling sound these strings gave it a warm mellow sound, very guitar-like. The big advantage is that I can use my mandolin melody-playing skills right off the bat. I can also recommend Aquila's set of soprano ukulele strings, which are tuned exactly like a mandolin/violin, GDAE. I took a chance and ordered a small ukulele with a toylike appearance (Zimo 17") from China (through Amazon), and once the Aquila strings were in place that ukulele was a joy to play.

The packaging is a bit sparse, with no information on what tuning to use. If one were to stumble across the pack of strings without having recently ordered it from a place like Amazon, it wouldn't be obvious at all that it's meant to be tuned in fifths, and CGDA specifically.I put on the C, G & D strings and all seemed ok. The C & G are wound and sound much better than I expected.I got into trouble with the A string, which broke as I was getting it tuned up. I'm unsure if this was my fault or if it was a bad string (I've certainly broken strings on other instruments while tuning before, but it's not something that I can remember happening in quite a few years). This sours me on the purchase and I'm hoping to find a spare string of the same gauge so I don't have to either purchase a new set or go back to standard tuning.Edit: I'm revising my previous review to 4 stars as it's possible the broken string is my own fault and without knowing for sure I hate to blame the product. The three strings that are on are performing wonderfully and it's really given the ukulele new life for me. I've ordered a replacement set of strings to see if I'll be a bit luckier the second go around.

I wanted to tune my ukulele in fifths like my tenor guitar and tenor banjo. I tried fooling around with classical guitar strings but they always sounded like crap and would stick in the nut. This Aquila string set works well for CGDA tuning. Now I've got a little go anywhere practice instrument that sounds unique.Keep in mind the strings are designed for a concert uke and probably will not sound right on a longer scale instrument. I have not been able to find these locally, so thank you Amazon for carrying them.
