This is undeniably higher quality than every other hat stretcher I've used of owned. The price is a bit high for my taste though. It's $20-25 more than some other options.

I chuckled at first when I saw this because it reminded me of the "Breastplate Stretcher" joke from GOT. But I have an Irish flat cap that has always been just ever so slightly too tight. It fit, but it was uncomfortable after being on for an extended period. I used this stretcher on it, with amazing results. It didn't damage any of the stitching or fabric, but it stretched out the band just enough to completely resolve the tightness issues. I half expected the hat to shrink back to its original size, but it hasn't. This thing works amazingly well. And it is relatively easy to use. The trickiest part for me was keeping it from getting pulled inside the hat as I tightened it. But I was able to do it.

I own many hats and have for most of my life. I also have a very large head (hat size 7 5/8 or 7 3/4). Because I have a “long oval” shaped head (it is just what it sounds like) there have been a good many times when I have felt the need to stretch a hat a bit. This is the first one I have ever owned that expands in four directions instead of just two. I was curious to see how it would work on a leather cap I’ve had for years but has remained snug even after multiple attempts to stretch it on a typical stretcher. I put it on this stretcher and cranked it open until it was clearly exerting a good deal of force around the band. I left it on the stretcher for 24 hours, occasionally turning the screw just a bit more a few times. When I removed the cap it finally felt right on my head, not pinching but not floppy or too loose. I think it has been tamed at last!The stretcher seems well made from decent materials. I’m uncertain about the band around the perimeter. It looks just like a large rubber band that apparently adds some stability to the four sections, especially when they are not under tension. I am skeptical about how long this will endure as rubber bands tend to get old and brittle fairly quickly. I don’t know if it can be readily replaced. The threaded shaft that opens and closes the stretcher is awkward to use. The small cross piece gets in the way more than it helps. A heftier, thicker center that offered a better grip would be much better. As it was, I had to use a pair of pliers to get what I considered a reasonable amount of tension. This stretcher took much more effort than my other stretchers as well as more time.I’m happy with the outcome. This stretcher seems to have done the job. But the construction leaves me with some concern about its endurance. And the difficulty in getting it to adequately tighten detracts from its overall usefulness.It works but I’m not sure I can recommend it.Maybe a good hat stretcher can also expand the mind?

I tend to use stretchers to maintain size from shrinkage and maintain the fitbut it certainly can give that little extra relief for natural materials.but the crux is this[...the 4 way action is giving me better shape preservation and more distributed stretchingWhile this was sent to me for review, I take that job seriously. Getting people the wrong product is wasteful, irresponsible and a hassle for everyone.Not everything I review gets high marks -- BTW, I live in a high sales tax state, review items aren't exactly at-no-cost for me]

This is a stout little unit. The edges are a solid wood construction with some metal guide rings built in. There is also a rubber band around the outside of the unit. Whether this is for keeping the hat in place or holding the parts together I couldn't say.I steamed my fitted New Era 59fifty hat for 2 minutes over a pot of boiling water to get is loosened up. I then put the hat on the stretched over night. Came back the next morning and the had was larger than it had been. I gave it one more round, leaving the stretcher where it had been while i steamed the hat again, replaced the had and gave it one more full turn. Waited another 8 hours for the hat to dry and that did the trick.Beats buying a new hat for 25-30
