The 4COVR PoE Security Camera System includes everything but the cables for a great video surveillance system. I'm replacing an existing, very outdated system, and wanted something with better resolution and easier to install.I have lots of ethernet throughout the facility, and my old cameras required coax and power, so I used baluns and power injectors through my Cat 5 wiring. That solution entailed an external power supply which is large and power hungry. The 4COVR PoE Security Camera System cameras work over ethernet, not just Cat 5 copper, and can be each camera, and the DVR can be treated like network devices. That means 100 meter connection distance to the DVR, or your network switch. The 4COVR DVR has a built-in 8 port POE hub to connect the cameras to the DVR. Installation couldn't be easier. The cameras that are included in this kit are impressive. They're compact and extremely rugged, perfect for less-than-ideal environments. Ther metal enclosure is waterproof and suitable for outdoor applications. My older cameras delivered an NTSC RS-170 video signal. The 4COVR cameras are 5 megapixel for a 2592 x 1944 pixel image. The picture is great in daylight, and pretty good in low lighting conditions as well. The video recorder hosts all the controller functions, including storage, I/O, and network. All the functions are achieved through HDMI and mouse ports. You can set up the system to record all the time, or only when motion is detected. The motion detection can be tuned in the software. The system can be monitored remotely via phone/tablet app, or with Windows-only remote viewing software. Another option is to set up an account with the company to view through their webpage, but that too appears to be a Windows-only solution. Two TB of storage are included, and you can expand to up to 8 TB.The quality of the cameras and the ease of installation are the best features for me. Third party IP cameras that support the right protocol might work. There are a variety of different cameras available and if they're the same quality as the ones that were included, I'd check them out.

I have a few wifi style cameras around my house which are powered by a solar panel. Every day the sun charges the battery and the battery can last for a month or more. I am pretty happy with that system since it is easy to install (no wires) can be placed anywhere (no wires) and is easily viewable over an app I have on my phone (again, no wires.)The problem is that wifi cameras are easily tampered with and lack the level of sharpness wired cameras have. Thieves can block the wifi signal with cheap electronic gizmos and foil any chance you have of catching a video or photo. The thieves don't even need to know whether you have wifi cameras--they can just assume you do and scramble them. These cameras are wired. They require a connection to the provided recorder and, if you want to view them on an app, the recorder has to be plugged in (again, wires) to the internet. There is no wifi anything with this device (except if you want to view the cameras online) and that is both a strength and a weakness. The set is very good quality--four cameras, cable and a DVR to record everything. The camera works at 5MP which is quite a bit sharper than most wifi cameras available nowadays but nowhere near as sharp as wired cameras of 12MP or even higher which are being offered to consumers online. 5MP will allow you to zoom in on the picture and read a license plate or see a face more clearly in many cases but is not nearly state of the art.IT takes a bit of doing to set these up--you need to place the cameras where you think they are useful and run a cat 5 or better wire to each one. Which brings me to another weakness--these are not PTZ style cameras-- you cannot adjust them remotely in any way. Not sure why the seller chose to do that, PTZ is not an expensive option and it makes each camera much more versatile since you can cover nearly a full circle of vision with a single camera. There is good too. While you do have to wire the camera with cat 5 or better, thee are power over ethernet (PoE) which means that both power and the signal travel over the same wires--you don't need an outlet or batteries for each camera. The big plus of this style of camera setup is that it works with or without internet. It records locally on the provided box (which you can backup to the internet if you like) and no signal jamming thief is going to be able to prevent the camera from recording what it sees.Unless they spray it with paint or cut your power.

Very user friendly system. Nice crisp clean images. If you go to far out with POE keep in mind you may need secondary power. That one got me. Motion detection works wonderfully. Cable length is useable for most homes.
