First things first: TDS (total dissolved solids) is not a particularly useful measure to test water quality. It simply measures the percentage of stuff that’s not water that is dissolved into your water.Second: A water filter (other than reverse osmosis) will not lower TDS, so don’t expect this gadget to show you that your water filter is working. It’s not designed to do that.Having said that, a TDS measure can definitely tell you whether the water you are measuring is distilled or not. It can also hint at whether your water has been enhanced with minerals. That’s exactly what I was looking for, and for that purpose, this little meter is great.Note that the backlight turns red for anything higher in TDS than the upper limit of RO or distilled water, which is about 50 PPM. Red does not mean your water is unsafe to drink. In fact, tap water under 150 is considered “low” TDS.I learned that the cheap bottled water from my supermarket is below 45 PPM, which is why it tastes “flat.” I learned that the filtered tap water at my house is 65 PPM which is in the low range for tap water. It also quickly measures water temperature, but only up to 176F - so don’t try to use this to measure anything even close to boiling hot or you could damage it.If you know what the measurement is actually telling you, this is a handy, inexpensive little meter.Highly recommended for the intended purpose!

I acquired this Smart Digital Water Tester to test the drinking water in my home and workplace. Although I do not have a way to compare the tester to a laboratory calibrated device, I tested my home water and found it was in the acceptable range of 51ppm. I then tried the tester on both distilled water and bottled purified water. The distilled water registered 0ppm as expected, and the sample of “purified water” only registered 2-3ppm.I took the tester to another city where the water company claimed the water was purer and softer than most. The tap water I tested at a home there registered 38-41ppm.Although these simple tests are not definitive proof, I believe that this tester would definitely be a good tool to determine if water exceeded safe levels of impurities. The only VERY minor complaint I had was that a battery warning label was placed over useful information on the package, and the insert did not give any clue to what the readings meant in terms of water purity. Although information on water purity can be found on the internet, more information on the insert would be nice.Recommended

I'm using this water quality tester for a hydroponics system I built with a student. The student is 8 years old and has learned so much about water quality, so this tester has come in handy to give us a way to assess the water we are using. It is easy enough to operate, so the student is using it independent of me to record data about our water. When we are together, we test other water (the swimming pool, Sparkletts, tap water, rain water, etc.). I don't have fancy equipment to calibrate this tester or see whether it is accurate, but the differences among all the types of water do suggest it is working well enough to discern considerable differences in the amounts of dissolved solids in our water. The tester's display is easy to read, and the buttons function as expected. My only complaint about this tester is that it comes with minimal instructions. There is an insert with instructions, but I had to go online and find a video on how to test water because I didn't feel the tester's instructions were useful in anyway. There are instructions printed on the packaging, but a label is placed inconveniently over them (see photo). I cannot remove the sticker without tearing through the printed info. This is frustrating. As far as I can tell, the info printed on the box is different from the info on the enclosed insert, so I know I'm missing something. Perhaps the info printed on the box isn't important?Besides the poor instructions, I think this is a decent tester for its price point. Now I just have to get the student to return it to me after our project ends!

Let's all agree that the water these days is suspect. I got this to check my tap, bottled and my reverse osmosis and i was shocked on how bad the tap was. The tester has an LED screen that also lights up red or green and then gives you the number read out. Depending on which 4 things this reads you'll see the numbers. I use it for water quality PPM and this gives you instant results. I was quite shocked on the readings i got on the various water we use here....let's just say tap was scary. This has a cap to protect the testing area and also has a replaceable button battery in the top part of the stick. There are a few buttons to turn on and off and cycle thru the 4 types of reading. This also can take a water temp F or C. The red and green backlight lets you immediately know if there's good or warning for the water. This is also small enough for travel just in case you are going to a place that is also suss. Its good to know what kind of water you are putting in your body...but scary too.
