Q&A

Q1: What is a contact pickup (piezo pickup)?

A1: A contact pickup is a vibration-sensitive device that captures sound by converting the physical vibrations of an instrument (e.g., guitar, ukulele) into electrical signals. Unlike microphones or soundhole pickups, it doesn’t rely on airborne sound waves but directly senses vibrations from the instrument’s body or surface.

Q2: Why choose a contact pickup over other pickup types?

A2: Key advantages include:

Superior feedback resistance: Ideal for loud live performances where microphone-like pickups might screech.

Easy installation: No permanent modifications—often attaches with adhesive or clamps.

Consistent tone: Less affected by ambient noise, delivering clean output.

Plug-and-play compatibility: Works directly with amps, mixers, or effects pedals.

Q3: Where do contact pickups shine?

A3:Live gigs: Perfect for loud stages or venues with poor acoustics.

Studio recording: Captures dry, isolated signals for precise mixing.

Outdoor use: Resists wind noise and environmental interference.

Q4: How to optimize a contact pickup’s sound?

A4:Experiment with placement: Near the bridge boosts clarity; near the soundhole balances warmth.

Use a preamp: Enhances dynamics and compensates for impedance mismatch.

Blend with a mic: Hybrid setups combine vibration clarity with natural airiness.

I’m upping my review to 5 stars. I thought it wasn’t working, but I think it was only user error. It’s working right now. I couldn’t be happier. I will be buying more!

The Micovay 50MM Guitar Pickup is a fairly simple to install guitar pickup for a number of acoustic instruments and in my case, a low cost acoustic guitar. It should be noted that if you are installing into an instrument that has never had an output jack or volume control installed, you will need to drill into the instrument for a permanent installation. This kit comes with everything you need as far as the pickup, the wiring, the volume potentiometer, and the mounting hardware.I'm generally reluctant to drill holes into a guitar of any kind without knowing how it is ultimately going to sound first. So for testing and review purposes, I chose to mount the transducer pickup temporarily, starting by adhering it just inside the sound hole of my guitar with nano tape, leaving the volume control and output jack uninstalled and dangling. Through this temporary mounting I found through trial and error that the best placement for the transducer on my specific guitar (classical nylon string) is actually best near the bridge of the guitar. I felt I obtained more tonality in this location than I did just inside the sound hole.Everything appears to sound and work as described in the product description. I should also note that the Micovay 50MM Guitar Pickup does not come with any type of instructions, but the product page does outline a Pro Installation Guide that is essentially what steps you need to follow.Overall, for the price point which seems more than fair for a guitar pickup, the Micovay 50MM Guitar Pickup seems like a great low cost product that many acoustic instrumentalists will enjoy. Will it be the best pickup you can buy for your instrument? I'd have to say no, but it does give a nice clear, volume controllable output that will take your instrument to the next level of sound output. At the low cost price, I would recommend the Micovay 50MM Guitar Pickup.
