The flame sensor monitors the burner to detect whether or not a flame is present. If the sensor does not detect a flame, it shuts the gas valve off, preventing raw gas from dumping into your home. Over time, a flame sensor may lose it's the ability to sense the flame, even when the flame is present.

This is not a direct replacement for g40 unit. The connection on the top is too big. Sensor is 3/4" longer than original part.
