58mm Double-Headed Espresso Tamper and Distributor by MATOW
Take your barista skills and style up a notch with a professional, dual-head portafilter leveler and tamp.

Do justice to your brew. Level, evenly distributed grounds are an essential first step in achieving the perfectly packed basket of fine ground espresso. Twist the 3 leaf clover dial side down 3 times to evenly disperse the grounds. Turn your tool over and use the flat base palm tamper. Packing the grounds tight creates the right amount of pressure for a proper espresso pull.

The adjustable height of the distributor allows some control over depth of your pack (*remember - a full basket is required to get a tight pack and high quality pour. If the basket isn't completely full the tool will not reach your grounds. For best results, groom the top of the basket with a flat edge before leveling and tamping).

Use the distribution/leveling side to evenly distribute the grounds in your portafilter, then flip to the adjustable tamper side for a uniform tamp, every time.

HOW IT WORKS:
PROCESS 1 - Load your portafilter basket with the desired amount of freshly ground coffee.
PROCESS 2 - Retract the distributor side to it's shallowest depth, and place the distributor on your portafilter, blade side down.
PROCESS 3 - Gently spin the distributor until your coffee grounds have been evenly distributed and leveled. If the distributor does not reach the coffee, adjust the depth accordingly. Note: you do not want to be applying heavy pressure to the grounds at this stage -- only enough to level the coffee in the basket.
PROCESS 4 - Flip the distributor over and extend the tamper (flat side) to its maximum height. Tamp your grounds to your desired pressure.
PROCESS 5 - For consistent tamping every time, adjust the tamper depth so it matches the depth of the tamp you created in Step 4.

I have used a wire tool for puck distribution for a long time. While that tool does what it is supposed to, there is no dressing of the grounds to the rim of the basket; unequal thicknesses of grounds in the basket will still happen.I hesitated for a few years buying this tool, mostly because it is quite expensive. Finally got around to treating myself to one. It's a great tool! The threaded depth adjustment (for both ends) is terrific! NO guessing as the level of grounds in the basket.I do wonder some about the exact technical specs of the compressed grounds. It is conceivable that the compression may be uneven. The instructions expressly warn against using the tapered vanes for puck compression, but how does one know that has NOT happened? The proof of the pudding is in the eating, as it is said. Whether it's a placebo effect that simply makes me happy, OR that the distribution of grounds is better now than without the tool...what does it matter? I'll take either one! This tool does work with a funnel. I generally use 18.6-19.0g of grounds depending on the beans. That much coffee in an 18g. Rancilio basket will get you some peaks over the edge of the basket. A funnel helps with that...and this tool has no problem fitting to the funnel. After the initial distribution, I remove the funnel and give the puck a few more twists with this tool until there is contact made between the tool and basket edge. With proper adjustment, this does not overly compress the grounds, I still use a tamp to finish the basket. Small tool adjustments are needed from time to time depending on the beans you purchase. They are certainly NOT the same all the time. No one expects that, I'm sure. This tool feels well in-hand. Precision designed and manufactured. It is a pleasure to use.

I am trying out the techniques of using the wire device to break up clumps in the ground coffee and this device to make or all smooth and uniformy compacted. It does it's job.

The thing I like most about this tamper is it’s solid construction. It has some heft to it and makes it very easy to even out the coffee grounds and tamp them down when filling your porta filter. I find it also reduces the mess and speeds up the tamping process.

I have access to some amazing small batch roasters here in Seattle and in an effort to treat their products with the utmost respect, I purchased this gadget. As a newbie to at home espresso making, I’m very open to anything that will assist me an pulling a consistently awesome shot. This really helps. The distributor side is very easy to use and adjust, although based on some internet research I’ve left the setting at the lowest and only adjusted the tamping side as I’ve changed coffees. The tamping side is much easier to use practically and consistently than a traditional tamper. It helps take a lot of guess work out of the pressure. It fits perfectly in the 58mm portafilter of my Kitchenaid semi automatic espresso maker and works in conjunction with a dosing ring to reduce mess and waste.I know there are more expensive versions of this available, but for a beginner I’m very satisfied with my purchase. Maybe down the line I’ll upgrade to a fancier model but I don’t see the point right now.
