This might be my sixth or seventh indicator, I like that the shaft's enclosed.I tried this out in a few places on the lathe; to dial in thread depth when using the compound and to capture saddle movement. It's too long for the inside movement as shown in the picture, but you can move it to the right side after preloading it.The movement of the dial is smooth the full length, and for me the yellow background makes it easier to read. The full enclosure will let you know where it will fit under movement so you don't have to worry about it suddenly becoming a carriage stop.

Arrived in a nice foam case and checked accuracy against some other 0.0005" dial indicators I have on hand and can confirm (at least mine) is within 0.001". More than fine enough measure the backlash in the ways on some older Fellows shapers I use. Only issue is the zero dial seems to grind on the housing, and there's a noticeable hard spot when rotating a full 360 degrees. If you don't make reference measurements and are just looking at deltas that's fine, but if you're constantly making dial adjustments it's rather rough and I don't see it working in and getting any better over time. But short of that, it operates great at a fraction of the price of the well-known brands.

Great tool to have around the shop. Seems accurate compared to a gauge block. Helpful on the mills and lathes. We use this tool to measure deflection on beams too. This is super economical compared to the big Japanese tool suppliers.

Comes in a nice fitted storage case; doesn't rattle when shaken side to side.Totally analog, not digital. And for dial indicators analog is the only way to go; for measuring continual displacements digital will drive you crazy. Easy-to-read to the nearest thousandth of an inch. The range is from a minus 12 thousandths to slightly over 1 inch (1.054 inch) if you put the dial zero straight up. The dial cover, which contains the scale including zero, can rotate so you can put the zero where you want with respect to the pointer. The pointer rotates once for each 0.1 inch and there is a small rotating pointer that keeps track of these additional rotations of the main pointer. In other words, a totally conventional bottom plunger design. So you can easily measure displacement or amount of out of round, etc.The outside diameter of the case is 2 3/8 inches (6 cm) and the device is surprisingly heavy, 205 g (7.23 ounces/0.452 lb) or close to half a pound. The case has an attachment system that you can fix to a rod or other support stand. The Amazon description says it has a bottom carbide contact surface. It does not come with a Calibration Certificate but the price is less than one third of either the American or Japanese name brand competitors. In conclusion: highly recommend.

Works good, keeps dust and debris from stiffening dial up
