Will need slight modification to fit an E39, but throttle response and gas mileage are both improved.

You have to love aFe parts: well made and a great company to deal with: aFe was very responsive to my questions prior to purchase. My only (very small) complaint would be that the instructions were pretty poor. I took my time and went slow...took about an hour to put the CAI on my BMW E39. No concerns at all with fitment. Sounds great! It definitely didn't help my gas mileage because now I'm accelerating harder than before just to hear the "growl." Performance? I can't immediately tell an increase in power, but didn't really expect to. I have a Supersprint exhaust on the way...the two together should boost my HP a bit.

Though I'm satisfied with the end result, a good throaty sound and free air flow, the fit of this leaves something to be desired, especially considering the price. For your money you get a filter, a heat shield, a machined ring, and some minimal hardware. The machined ring is impressive, connecting the filter to the MAF sensor through the heat shield, but they're too cheap to through in a new O ring, so you'll have to reuse your existing or get a new one. The filter is a filter... nice and big and quality. The heat shield, though, didn't fit my car well. It rode against the radiator hose and pushed hard enough to cause a leak on the slip fitting on the water pump until I beat it to fit, loosing some of the paint in the process. Had to bend the tab where it picks up the headlight screw and push to get the holes aligned, and again had to reuse existing hardware (barely long enough). Also not a good fit to the contour around the wheel well, where it had to again be bent to fit.In the end, I'm happy with the result, but for the money, I expected a much better fitting heat shield and they could through in an O ring and a new screw for the headlight area.

It's ok if it's the only mod you make! Sounds good and I do notice better gas mileage. I recommend after this install, upgrade the muffler from the cat back and remap the ECU. You can also install the Sprint Booster which in all reality makes it seem as the car has more power, but what its really doing is taking the lag out of the pedal from pressing the pedal. Really fun!!
