Phonemic Awareness

I work with struggling readers in the K-3 grades. This is a wonderful tool that the kids enjoy using as they learn how to segment words.I prefer this board over others because it includes two spaces where the child writes out the letters. This helps so much when kids begin using diagraphs, where there is a singular sound, but this sound is actually made of two or more letters. The kids like having the dot visuals to "tap out" the word, analyze the sounds, and then write the word out properly. One of my more difficult kindergarten students loves this board. He feels more successful and can't wait to "flip sides" and begin working on more difficult words. The boards are well constructed, easy to clean and a nice size. The board's design also encourages proper letter formation by including a lined area for writing.I'm glad I ordered this and recommend it as a helpful tool for all beginning and struggling readers, along with children who may have speech impairments. This board will encourage them to analyze the sounds in words and give stronger connections for spelling.

This is great for phonemic awareness! I love that it has 2 sides: syllables & sounds. These will last & are super easy to use.

I used to apply painters' tape to whiteboards to achieve what these boards provide. In order to build phonemic awareness, students need to practice breaking down (or building) words by the sounds the words make. These boards create the visual platform for breaking down words. The boards are limited to four sounds per word. As a kindergarten teacher, I am primarily working with CVC words. These fit in the boxes. But.....if we're going to split hairs here.....as I'm with struggling readers and writers, having the four available blocks confuses them sometimes. They're searching for a fourth sound when there isn't a fourth sound. Sometimes they break up a single sound to fill all four boxes.I know these boards can't be magical, and I'm being picky. I wrote the above only as a helper to other kindergarten teachers: be prepared for the "finding-four-sounds-in-three-sound-words" challenge. Soon the kids will get it or you will begin to cross out that fourth Elkonin box.

These are a nice tool for my small group intervention time. I like the different sound box options. Black expo erases easily if erased right away but if it sits for a day or two then I have to use a wet wipe to get it iff

These come in so handy during our phonics lessons. We doa lot of sound box work and syllables when we are learning how to read in my classroom. This is a handy tool to have for phonics group time. They easily are written on and erased with dry erase markers. Just make sure to erase right away and don’t leave onas it can be challengingly remove when dry erase sits on these mats. Also, red can be a stinking color when using with mats. These are great!!!

These phonics blending boards are perfect for students who are learning how to sound out and decode simple words. When writing the sounds in the boxes, the students will tap each dot under each box as they say the sounds. They will then practice blending the words back together into a fluent word. Students can receive additional practice by writing the complete word beneath the sound boxes on the handwriting lines to help them with handwriting skills.

I really like this pack of twelve dry erase workmats. The workmats are double sided, each side featuring a different activity for your students. One side has sound mapping boxes for use with phoneme grapheme word work. The other side has syllable mapping boxes for use with assisting your students in hearing how many syllables are in a word. The sound mapping side is for words that have four or less sounds, featuring the boxes, the dots (to use with bingo chips or foam counters), the left to right arrow (to reinforce word directionality), and primary lines for students to write the word. The syllable mapping side is for words with three or less syllables, featuring the boxes, the dots, the left to right arrow, and the primary lines to write the word. This product is best for PreK through early second grade, as you cannot use it for words with more than 3 syllables or more than four sounds. It would not meet the needs of students who are working with longer words. The boards are made of a fairly lightweight cardboard that is plasticized/laminated. They are decent workmats, but will not last through rough or heavy use. I can see having to replace these after a few years worth of use. The dry erase mats are very easy to erase. Overall this is a nice product to use in small group, at a center, with partners, or with a small classroom.
