I bought this to measure the alcohol concentration in my home made liquor. I calibrated it with water, but the tool doesn't give me a measurement. While trying to measure my own stuff, I can fiddle with the calibration screw as much as I want, and the entire measuring gauge is completely white all the time. It's not a calibration problem on my part, I went through the whole range, it's literally impossible to force it to read any realistic value. It turns out, it's also the same way with some store bought brandy (tested on apricot and gin flavored). There must be other substances in the drink, other than the alcohol, which is also refracting the light.I'm giving more than 1 star, because it turns out, it actually gives me a very good reading on simple liquors. I tested on Vodka and Tequila, and the measured number came out close enough to the bottle's label after calibration (Vodka about 1% off, Tequila about 3-4% off). Since I only bought this for my home made stuff, and it doesn't work, it's going to deserve a low rating, especially since it advertises that it can measure brandy, which it can't. It basically only works on water diluted ethanol.

The product does not produce a reasonably accurate alcohol measurement. The grape must measured 25.0 Brix prior to the start of fermentation (both using a refractometer and a hydrometer). This implies a potential alcohol at completion of fermentation of around 14%. The alcohol refractometer reads between 21-22% which is impossible. The refractometer is also not easy to read and takes a bit of practice to properly gauge the measurement.

It is so simple to use and although more pricey than I wanted; I hope it is the only one I will ever buy because of its quality part...it is to help me gauge WHO hand sanitizer recipe to ensure the alcohol level to be minimal 60% +... I’ve tried with just plain water, vodka, and other different types of liquid to test it first and it worked beautifully!!

I bought this to test the final concentration of alcohol in some home made sanitizer. I followed the WHO recipe for hand sanitizer which uses 99.8% isopropyl alcohol. I didn't dilute the sanitizer because while based on how the alcohol felt it seemed to be almost 100%, and when I tested after calibrating with distilled water (0%) it was off the scale. After diluting you're supposed to get a hand sanitizer in the 80% range so I know the alcohol percentage in the isopropyl was accurate and that even with peroxide and glycerin added it was still over 80% which I was happy to know so my sanitizer is strong. I've made some undiluted and given away to family and friends.

easy to read: just put some wine on the blue bit, slap the cover down, and stare at a lightbulb like a 5 year old with his first telescopeeasy to clean: just run it under some cold water and dry it off with a paper towel.
