Ozark Trail in the past had a very nice stainless steel mess kit with copper bottom with the exact same pieces, just not aluminum. I have had two of them for 10 years and they have held up great. I needed 2 more and found out that to go cheaper Ozark Trail went to aluminum and changed how the handle worked. These are terrible. On the first camping trip my sons went on they got all bent up. The handle is designed so bad you have to take off a bolt and nut to open the kit; with kids these get lost immediately. The stainless steel ones never did. Also cooking in it totally discolored the aluminum; the stainless steel version didn't have this problem. Look for a stainless steel one with flip handle coated in vinyl.

I went on an overnight bike tour last summer. I wanted a light weight inexpensive mess kit for cooking. I was in Wal-Mart and came across this kit. I decided I'd give it a try. I paid close to $5 dollars for this kit. It wasn't the greatest quality in the world but it perfomed very well. I cooked one dinner, boiled water for coffee three times, and also cooked breakfast. I cleaned the kit after each use and its still like new ready for the next trip. I would not recomend you take this on a Trans American but for short trip...You'll have no problem with this kit.

Don't buy this mess kit! I only paid $5 for mine, on a last-minute desperation run to Wal-Mart, and even that was too much. The thing is made from cheap, thin metal, and it doesn't even close up the traditional way that a mess kit should. I wouldn't trust it over a fire or propane cooker. Spend the $9 to $20 and get a decent set from Boy Scouts or another outfitter, but don't buy this one! That said, I suppose it is shiny, and if you just need one for a child to play at backyard pretend camping, and you can get the $5 version at Wal-Mart or some such place, go right ahead.Good luck.
