I was extremely disappointed in this collection...my grandson is a very avid rock and mineral collector...these specimens were very poor...not recommend at all for a gift.

This is a good educational collection of rocks & minerals for classroom use or for any setting where someone is trying to learn about earth materials. Full disclosure: I am a geology professor and I require students in my college-level introductory geology course to get this kit, however I don't benefit personally from student purchases in any way. I require it the way I also require the textbook. That being said, this is a useful set of rocks and minerals to anyone teaching or learning about geology. The rock set includes seven (7) different samples of each igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks. The rocks make up 21 of the 50 samples, the rest being minerals or ore materials that represent more than one ore mineral in the sample. The minerals include samples that are organized on the included one-page sample key into useful groups; rock-forming minerals, ore & utility minerals, rough gemstone minerals and eight of the ten hardness-gauge minerals on Mohs' scale of hardness. Apatite (Mohs #5) and diamond (Mohs #10) are not included. Instead of topaz for Mohs hardness = 8 they include beryl, which has a hardness around 8 but it can also dip down to 7.5 or so. The absence of diamond isn't surprising, obviously, but apatite is a curious exclusion because it's a cheap and common commodity mineral for fertilizer production. The collection comes in a heavy cardboard storage box with included plastic tray for samples. The plastic appears to be thick enough to not fracture easily: I've carried mine back and forth to my office several times and so far it's intact within the box. I've seen thinner plastic tray material in other boxed rock/mineral collections. The collection also includes a one-page sample key and a short pamphlet introducing the user to rocks and minerals. The cardboard storage box is covered with a faux-hide texture layer and seems reasonably sturdy, but it's still cardboard so it probably won't react well to water. There's also an included foam pad layer, which does a pretty good job of absorbing dust from softer samples and preventing samples from jumbling around. The samples are smallish, likely so they can fit 50 into the box, each one being about 2 cm long or wide. A few might be choking hazards to toddlers, so please be advised about that. Generally however the samples are sufficiently large to examine physically and visually, well enough to learn what those types of materials are like in hand sample. They aren't minuscule, at least in my set.

I was very impressed with this set. I am taking Physical Geology in college right now and this kit is an excellent addition for study purposes. The minerals are not huge, but they are big enough for what I need them for. The identification sheet that comes with the kit is very nicely laid out and even has the Mohs hardness scale on it.This would be a great kit for a high school science class as well as a college geology lab, and this would work great for a practical exam.

I am delighted that I bought this set. Itis a very high quality set for beginners and as a reference for collectors. The samples are of high quality and are large enough to be very representative. Their loose format makes them easy to manipulate for examination. The small labels are glued on very securely so they can be put back in place if jostked around. If you are considering the set of 100 by this same company, it is also quite good (see my review on it) although the sample size is smaller due to the need for overall size. Nearly all samples are duplicated in the larger set but there are about 4 unique to this set of 50.

I purchased this set for my daughter's 4th birthday. She is obsessed with collecting rocks, especially pretty ones. She loves this set and asks me what each rock is called and tries repeating the names. While this is meant for older children and adults, with supervision, this is a great item for younger kids who enjoy rocks and rock collecting. I just have to make sure my 2 year old isn't around when we're looking at them! All of the rocks come out (not glued down or mounted) and all but one are very sturdy and can be handled. The one that is very thin and fragile I told my daughter to just look at without touching. She usually complies. She also loves going through and showing me her favorite rocks (usually the pink, purple and very shiny ones) and asking me which ones are my favorite. I really recommend this item for anyone who enjoys rocks.

Working with my son on some 'rock' stuff for school. There are a few good books available in the market, see my other reviews, that teach you a lot. But this box makes it complete. 50 nice 'rocks' that help you to make more visible and touchable than books are doing. The rocks are numbered, so making it easy to figure out which they are.The box itself has a brief description of the rocks, so for anyone who like to get to know more about them, take a look at one of the books that I reviews. I gave my son the task to look up all the rocks of the box in the books he has, and he really loved it. Not just simply a quick check, but he started to read, and find connections himself between them. Not bad interest for a 5th grader. He was finally 'mining' some real rocks, instead of playing minecraft the whole day. He is now even looking in the garden for more stuff. So to get your kids away from computers, ipads and other electronic games, this box with a few books is a great way of doing it!

My Granddaughter loves Gem stones and I think this would help her to understand the different types. I like that there is a sheet showing all of them with the stones being numbered to match the description. She has always been fascinated by Gem stones. The price is ok. each stone would average $1.00 each,,, but it also comes with a nice case so I think it makes it worth it.
