Works good. I bought the same one a year ago and ordered this one to replace the one in the back.

I replaced a SunCast hose reel that was very similar to this one. In all fairness, I got several years out of the old one. But it leaked from day 1 and it was just never as robust as this new Ames reel. This thing hasn't leaked ONE DROP! And it just feels heavier built. Spins much easier, very easy to install. Very good product.

First of all, I own 3 of these reels and have them mounted in various locations around my home. For the money, I don't think there's a comparable product out there.I'd like to touch on 2 of the issues I see people complaining about most.First, the sturdiness of the product and issues with mounting it. This product comes with screws but they are only intended for a wood application. I have a brick home so I went to the local hardware store and picked up a 1/4" anchor kit for $3 and a handful of 1/4" washers for another $2. When lining this up to mount, simply hold the reel against the surface and mark the BIG hole in all four corners (I used a sharpy). Drill out your markings (with the included mortar bit from your anchor kit) and install the anchors. Next, install the washers onto the screws, and then the screws into the anchors, leaving about 1/4" of the screw exposed. Take the hose reel and get all 4 holes, on all 4 corners positioned over the washers and screws. Now simply pull the reel down gently so that it slots the screws into the channel above the holes. Tighten down the screws snug to the housing of the reel, making sure to not over-tighten them, and you're done.Second, several people have complained that the included lead hose leaks badly when connecting it to the faucet. Included in the plastic bag with the screws is an O-ring that seals the head to the faucet. I didn't catch this at first but I did notice there was not an O-ring pre-installed. I didn't see the O-ring in the bag initially so I grabbed a universal O-ring I had lying around thinking it would be fine. This also leaked because it was too small. The included O-ring is considerably larger than the universal ones I've always bought. Once I found the one included with this reel, the leaking stopped.I hope this might help make a more informed decision on buying this product. I think they're great and I would definitely recommend them to those with watering needs on a budget.

Problem 1 was when I went to mount the reel on the porch. The supplied screws were pot metal and straight slot. Even after drilling pilot holes I could not get those cheap screws into the wood. The minute the going got tough the head stripped. So, I went into my vast collection and found four screws that would work and got it mounted. Please include either good Phillips or Torx screws made of stainless steel.Problem 2 came in getting the hoses mounted. The short supply hose has a nice brass female end and mounted to the spigot well. Next I needed to mount the female end of my garden hose to the center of the reel. That male fitting is cheap neoprene type plastic. Therefore I had to thread it very carefully as the brass hose end will easily cross thread the plastic fitting. The problem is that the plastic fitting is at the center of the reel between the two sides of the reel. I cannot get the hose fitting finger tight enough with no room for my fingers. There is no room for any kind of pliers to grip and tighten. With pliers that are long enough I can achieve about 1/8" of travel. I tried needle nose and they will not grip the hose fitting. I tried a wrench and it has no room to grip and then move. Regardless of what I did, it severely leaked. For now I hung 18" of hose out the side of the reel and reeled the hose in. Now when I want to use it I unreel hose, then connect the hose end that hangs out directly to the spigot, bypassing the internal fittings. This works, but is a lot of extra work each time I want to water. It is a shame the thing was not designed and manufactured better. As it will reel the hose I gave it two stars.UPDATE: I will up this to three stars as I discovered a way to mount the hose. I removed a round gray cover that exposed six screws to remove one side of the reel. This exposed the hose bib and I got the connection secured. If you use this method, be sure to re attach the side before testing under water pressure or the hose bib will be pushed out. The side has to align correctly to hold the bib in place. If you are handy with tools this works.

I hate tangled hoses spread over the lawn. We installed one of these in the late ‘70’s. It looked cheap, so I did not expect it to last long, but my wife uses it everyday, and it is still in intact in 2018. Amazing! Don’t worry about kinks from shipping! Uncoil the hose, and the kinks disappear. If the gasket deteriorates, replace it with a round cross-section rubber gasket, and you will have a leak-free connection for years. The new 3/4” hoses are extremely durable and flexible. We will never go back to 5/8” hoses. This reel takes a 50’ of 3/4” hose with ease; it will surely take 75’, and maybe 100’. The crank looks flimsy, but we use it everyday, and it has held up all these decades. I am sure the additional ones we purchased for the back and for our son’s house will last just as well. It is really easy to coil the hose when finished, and it looks good. I hate those messy-looking storage racks that sit on the ground, and it’s a pain-in-the-neck to move them everytime you mow and edge the lawn.
