One of the projects I’ve planned to do for a long time is to 3D-print a ukelele 😊 This is not an easy undertaking which is why I’ve always procrastinated in starting it. Getting these tuning pegs from Artibetter represents a significant start in this project – now I have to finish building the rest. The product comprises 4 geared tuning pegs, mounting screws, and finishing grommets. The knobs on the pegs and the grommets are made from black plastic. I see that other reviewers are complaining that these pegs are only suited for one side of the headstock. I received 2 right and 2 left tuning pegs so it looks like the vendor has acted on that feedback. Otherwise, I found that the brass gear can be easily removed using a cross-head screwdriver allowing the wormgear and knob assembly to be removed, reversed, and reinstalled (see photo) – so this is really a non-issue. The mechanism is made completely of metal and is quite solid but turning the gears is rather rough and stiff. I think they will loosen up in use and a bit of oil would also help. The string spindle is a little loose, but I think this could be restrained by careful adjustment of the mounting hole in the headstock. I’m not too concerned about the dimensions – I can change the 3D-printed design of the ukelele to suit.I have yet to try out these pegs as my 3D-printed ukelele has not yet been built but they look like they should be well-suited for it. The price is less than $9 which seems to be reasonable for this kit of 4 tuning pegs.

Tuning pegs need to include mirror-imaged pegs for the left and right side of the headstock. If you look at the photos in the listing for these tuning pegs, you will see depicted 2 left and 2 right tuning pegs. However, what I received was 4 identical right hand pegs. If I used these, they would not align and hence they are not usable. They also appear to be a little loose and that makes me wonder if that looseness would prevent the instrument from staying in tune, but I will never know if that is the case because I was unable to install these pegs on the uke that I was restoring.
