These headshells make mounting cartridges extraordinarily easy, in large part by taking away so much of the guesswork and cumbersome maneuvering that often comes with that task. The fixed screw points add a very convenient touch to the mounting process and the adjustable overhang really increases the headshell’s compatibility with a wide variety of carts. I also like that Audio-Technica provides the shell at a number of different weights to help narrow down the best option for your preferred cartridge.Of course, the main drawback for me is the price. $100 is a LOT of money to spend on a headshell, especially when there’s an ocean of cheaper options that work perfectly fine. That being said, I think it’s worth the money. You’d have a hard time finding a more solidly-constructed, convenient-to-use option than this one for the money.

Very well made and weight was accurate. Mounting a cartridge that is smallish from top to tip ( in my case Denon DL-103 going on Technics 1200GR) may require a spacer and much longer screws than typical. I need this as a heavier head shell to get the effective mass good for resonance control for the 103 given it's compliance - however, I cannot fit a spacer with typical screws (15mm) and the base of head shell is also very close to the playing surface without said spacer. I need a spacer to get arm angle correct into the range I can adjust VTA on the Technics. Without a spacer the arm is too low at the tip to even adjust using turntable VTA adjustment. Ideally you want the arm to be essentially level when playing - on the Technics you can raise the weighted end of the arm but but if the cartridge end is too low when VTA is at 0 on the arm you have to space it up. You can space up with additional platter mat(s) but not my personal preference to do so long term. In addition, this head shell has a much larger offset from the underside of the mounting surface to the center line of the mounting stem than many other head shells due to the adjustment mechanism. This offset increased the height of the needle from the surface (by about 2mm or so) which also adds the spacer requirement for shorter cartridges. Any cartridge that measures less than 17mm vertically (as mounted) from top cartridge surface to tip will need significant (2mm+) correction. I measured the offset for this head shell to be level from the under-surface to the playing surface on my TT at 19mm+. Finally, the overhang is easily adjustable - but the side screw rides in a channel which makes it difficult for me to understand how adjustable it is for azimuth. It's optimized for threaded cartridge bodies given the vertical thickness of the head shell body and it has no grooves in the body near the mounting holes which on other cartridges will provide 1or 2mm relief on the length of screws needed. You mileage may vary based on how adjustable your TT and cartridge obviously. If you have a highly compliant cartridge you will likely need +1mm spacing from the numbers I quote above.

Even better than ATs silver Technihard headshells, better than anything Ikeda or Fidelity Research ever produced. Simply the best!Oh and yeah they are expensive.

I have been looking for a good headshell with adjustable Azimuth and Overhang for a bit now. I saw the Audio Technica and it looked like a good design. When I installed my Denon DL103 on it and tried to put the headshell leads on the pins on the cartridge the leads barely made any contact with the pins. I had to fiddle around with the leads by crimping them before putting them on the cartridge pins. I have used several other headshells (generic, Jelco, Ortofon) and never had this problem. As anyone who does this type of installation knows the more you fiddle with the leads the more likely it is they will break. My impression is the leads for the cartridge were 1.2 mm rather than 1 mm. 1.2 mm is the size of the pin that the leads plug into the headshell with. 1 mm is the size of the pin that are installed in the cartridges.I will most likely purchase the Jelco HS-25 which is about $30 less expensive and has the same ability to adjust the Azimith and Overhange. Not recommended

This headshell feels very well constructed and is a quality item. It looks especially nice with the OC9 series cartridges, as the front of the cartridge and the headshell line up perfectly. It is apparently meant for the newer OC9 cartridges with built-in screw threads, but works perfectly on the older models as well (and indeed, any ½ in mount cartridge). The connectors on the included leads attached to the pins on my OC9 with ease. I paid $59 for this headshell, on sale, which I thought was reasonable. $89 seems a little steep, but it does feel like an $89 product. It includes a small hex wrench, so you can adjust both the overhang and azimuth screws. It's nice to be able to adjust the overhang without worrying about the cartridge twisting either direction in the headshell as you tighten the screws, as happens in a traditional headshell.
