About this item

  • Versatile dark ride cymbal
  • Wire-brushed top finish for clean stick definition
  • Lots of articulation
  • Buffed unlathed bottom allows cymbal to open up
  • Plenty of crashability without washing out

The 21" Organic Ride is a supremely versatile cymbal in the K Custom lineup. Its wire-brushed finish on top gives it clean, articulate stick definition. The buffed un-lathed bottom allows the cymbal to open up, giving it plenty of crashability without washing out.

Been playing 58 years. This may be the worst sounding ride cymbal I have ever heard. Horrible overtones, worse than just gong-like. Too much sustain. Mediocre bell. Not crashable at all. Prohibitive price. I initially bought it because I had played another one that sounded much different.

Everyone seems to be latching on to cymbals that are pure wash and look like they were dredged up from the bottom of an ancient shipwreck; I love those cymbals too and have quite the collection of Meinl metal, but at the end of the day I still look for something with musical tone and harmonics that lend themselves more to piano strings than empty aluminum trash cans. Enter the Zildjian Organic Custom Ride. This ride cymbal is a dream come true that mixes the best of both the dirty and clean worlds, both in sonics and aesthetics. Controlled stick articulation, minimal wash with deep resonant tone and medium sustain, little to no high frequency harmonic overtones, an earthy bell... what's not to like? It is medium heavy and can play fast, but even at higher speeds the musicality of the cymbal still shines. When you strike a cymbal like this you think less garage band or ancient jazz cymbals, and more potent orchestras and refined metallurgy. That is not to say it isn't versatile; it is immediately evident upon playing that this is a "do anything" cymbal. I play it in an American rock configuration and the sticking cuts through the guitars and keeps the tempo alive, and I also play it in a jazz quartet that needs extreme dynamics for our extreme(ly small) venues. My one caveat to this glowing review is that even though the cymbal is advertised as having a robust crash I disagree, I think of this as a pure ride cymbal with very little effectiveness when used as a crash. It simply does not rise into the mid-high tonal range that crashing brings out of a cymbal. Despite that, I have crash cymbals on my kit and it's not exactly torture to reach over and hit one of them when I need a crash sound. The coolest part of the cymbal? Brilliant finish belly. It's awesome and looks cool on stage. I don't even care what it does to the sound.
