I ordered this in hopes that it would do a better job at picking up from farther distances than standard lapel microphones. While it does indeed work at farther than lapels, only about 3-4 feet from the speaker. Anything farther than that and the two mics are nearly identical. It wasn't what I had hoped: which was to secure this mic to a handheld camera mount and record from 6-10 feet away, but it really doesn't do any better of a job than the camera's onboard mic from that distance.

This is a nice little cartiod mic with good sound quality and fits very well onto the hot shoe of the camera. It comes with two patch cords, coiled and non-coiled. The coiled is labeled for a camera and the other a smart phone. But the latter could be used on a camera or other device with an adapter.Since a patch cord is plugged into the mic and not a cord attached from inside it, it is more versatile. In a pinch, this could be used as a regular microphone with a longer patch cord and even fitted to a boom stand as it has a brass female fitting on the bottom of the mount. The little furry wind muff is a nice touch to the set up and can be used with or without it. With it on, it adds a bit more protection if you should drop the mic. The mounting bracket is easily attached after some figuring out, but I recommend attaching the mic to the bracket first before mounting it to the camera as it’s somewhat stiff.First I thought this defiantly didn’t fit a camera hot shoe. But the problem was the mounting wheel bracket to the hot shoe was just very stiff to turn the first time. Once freed up, it was no problem to mount to the camera.

I specialize in tech reviews and as a professional photographer and filmmaker have a good understanding of value vs. quality when it comes to recording devices. What’s the difference beween three near identical looking cardioid mics, BeastGrip, Boya, and Movo? Read on:By their looks you would think they are identical. The specs are. However, the BestGrip I received sounded muffled while my Boya is crisp and clear. Perhaps I received a defective one. I bought the Boya first and will be returning the Beast Grip. I do prefer having two so I can record with two recorders just in case of an unlikely glitch from the audio recorder. I suggest attaching to a mini tripod at an interview distance of about 18 inches.Of course this type of mic is also great on a camera hot shoe. At the time of this review, at $50 this Beastgrip is priced quite a bit higher than the others. You might also want to audition the very similar $55 Rode VideoMicro. Whichever brand you settle on, be on the lookout for coupons or sales that can bring the price down to at least $35 and very occasionally as low as even $20.
