You could certainly can do the same thing with a lesser square ruler and grid, but these are so accurate and easy to use. My only gripe is why do they have to cost a fortune.

This thin, breakable acrylic ruler arrived in only a poly-mailer envelope. I couldn't believe that there was no packaging at all to protect it from damage in the shipping process. I have returned it as two of the 4 corners were chipped, and I'm surprised there wasn't further damage as the envelope was badly cut during shipping. This ruler is for precision rotary cutting while quilting, and was unusable as the two chipped corners would snag the fabric, and would give a poor cut if the rotary cutter caught on it. I hope this feedback gets to the supplier who packaged it for shipping.

I have purchased nearly every block lock ruler because they are very accurate and start at the half square when you have a half square shaped perfectly. The other rulers work just as well especially the log cabin styles. I have purchased a 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 and 12 in square and all of the log cabin rulers. I just can’t do without them.

Makes squaring up your half square triangles easy...but you have to learn to use it. I recommend youtube!
