It is designed to let the base plate torsion or flex, so that it absorbs the forces of towing rather than rigidly transferring to the frame of the towed vehicle. This base plate is positioned for proper attachment to the frame and for easy access to hook up the tow bar.

A great base plate. It did not fit the front grill the same as that in the photo. On my install, the base plate seems to be about an inch lower, so I had to cut two slots in the horizontal grill fins and notch out two slots in the solid bumper to receive the bottom edges of the safety receivers. Sorry for the poor photo, that was after a devastating hail storm and I have since removed the base plate in anticipation of putting on a replacement car. Drilling into the bumper flange took 1-2 titanium drill bits and about 5 minutes per hole which cost me $60+ and that is with drill bit coolant wax and slower speed. I must have done something wrong with my drilling or my new drill bits purchased at HF and Amazon were crap. I will try the HF titanium step drill bit next time. The $25 bit at HD was better. I do have a light rust layer in the tab receiver tubes after about 4 rain storms. You should lube them to protect. I couldn't tell what thread size the electrical plug receiving tubes were, so I used self-taping screws.

I was able to install the blue ox base plate on my 06 honda crv in about 4 hours.The instructions were very clear and helpful.I am happy with the blue ox and would recommend.

Best nice tow plate and fix the Honda like a glove. Never installed anything like this and just followed the instruction and only took me three hours and I'm not a mechanic. Never had a front end bumme/rgrill off a car before. Drilling was a dream with the plate clamped on. Did have to ask for help to get the plate frame on and lined up. To heavy for one person. Didn't get it a five star because the bolts that come with the plate, not what I would call bolts to be used on something you are towing and endangering others. Broke three of the bolts using a torque wrench. Well, they didn't brake the threads twisted off the bolt in the nut. First time it happened I check my torque wrench. Even went to my second back up wrench, same than. Went to my "old" standard bar Craftsman torque wrench and quest what same thing. Instructions says to torque to 33-47 pounds of torque. Didn't happen in my case. Going to the bolt store this morning and buying grade 8 bolts and nuts and replacement them all.

The fit on my 2006 Honda CRV was perfect. Good quality. As per the instructions, I had to remove the front grill and had to drill some holes that required some effort. My only complaint is that the base plate rusted after the first winter where I live. 2 years after installation, I had to sand and lubricate the receiver tubes since these had rusted badly and inserting the pins was next to impossible. I guess this is to be expected from steel and the use of road salt. But this was an unexpected adjustment the morning we were planning our departure. My advice would be to generously apply grease inside the receiver tubes to prevent the corrosion to start off with. I suspect competitive products have the same issue with rust.
