Brake light switches are necessary only if you’re installing a supplemental braking system monitor, and the vehicle’s OEM brake light switch doesn’t work when the vehicle is in ‘tow’ mode.
The brake light switch is only activated when the brake pedal is depressed. No other manufacturer provides brake light switches with this level of specificity. If you know when the towed vehicle’s brake pedal is depressed and released, then you know if the supplemental braking system is positioned properly and working as it should.

When Should It Be Serviced?
If you have a bad brake light switch, symptoms can vary depending on your vehicle. However, two of the most prevalent and common are that the brake lights stay on all the time if the switch fails in the closed position, or the brake lights won’t illuminate at all when the pedal is pressed, indicating a failure in the open position.
These symptoms aren’t exhaustive, though. Other potential concerns can include:
- The cruise control won’t set or it cancels unexpectedly
- Brake lights flickering or activating intermittently
- The shift interlock won’t disengage, and you can’t move the gearshift lever normally or it might be stuck in park

My brake lights wouldn't go off prompting me to get a new brake light switch. This one fit perfectly and works perfectly as well. It's been a month now and it's still great. It was easy to install as well.
