Product Description

Brass Nautical 4inch Sextant Marine Navigation in Gift Box in Shiny Brass Finish - 1802 SB

The sextant was the primary instrument used for navigation at sea for hundreds of years. Without the invention and use of this instrument no one would have been able to travel and find the "New World" and therefore none would be here in the Americas. The nautical sextant is designed for navigational and astronomical purposes and allows horizontal and vertical angles to be measured. It is used in marine navigation for measuring vertical angles to stars, occasionally, also for measuring angles between terrestrial targets. The instrument is also fitted with filters, or dark-coloured glasses, which can be swung into position when needed, and are generally used for solar observations. The structure of the sextant is based on the theorem that a ray reflected by two mirrors is deflected by twice the angle enclosed by the mirrors. The sextant is a free hand instrument and so it's accuracy may be limited. It must be noted that the sextant measures angles, and not directions or bearings, and is a more accurate instrument than the compass, but not as accurate as the theodolite. The sextant however, in general, is lighter, more portable, and quicker to use than the theodolite. It can also be used from a moving platform, such as a ship or a small boat, where it is impossible to use a theodolite.

The Sextant was beautiful. But no word of a lie, after unwrapping, the box was damaged and covered in mould outside on the wood and inside on the velvet. This was a shameful offering which hurt to returnbecause the sextant was lovely, but tge dispkay box was nothing short of hazardous!

This was a gift for my Son. He has a PhD in Astrophysics and he loved it. I think he was being polite when he said he would use it but I know he genuinely loved it. It's really well presented and feels quite sturdy. I'm pleased to say it sits on his desk at uni and is often the centre of a conversation

My son really wanted this for Christmas. It's beautiful. It came in a beautiful box and was in perfect condition. We're very happy with our purchase.

IT IS NOT A FUNCTIONAL SEXTAN. That said, It is a beautiful piece, but I purchased because a review indicated that it was actually functional. In all fairness the seller did not indicate it was functional, however they certainly did not go out of their way to correct an erroneous review/comment (that I have found). So, if you're looking for a decoration, this is 5 stars for the price. If you're looking for a functional sextan - 1 star.
