Genuine & new. The box hologram passed all of Brother.com's authenticity verifications. I'm super happy with this thing as it solved the crappy printing problems I was having in less than 50 pages. The first 10 pages or after replacing a drum are still crappy but each successive page is better than the previous. After 50 pages, print quality is as good as new.

I AM VERY HAPPY WITH THIS GENUINE PRODUCT. NO issues installing. It arrived fast and the price is awesome. I will be purchasing again from this vender. Highly recommend that you buy genuine and not off brands that can break your machines. That has happened to me on a $500 brother home printer and I had to purchase a new printer. NEVER again buy off brand.

This is an original manufactured product so the quality is much better than the remanufactured ones. I think I got more than 25,000 pages out of it as it is the second drum I have used in all the years I have owned my Brother printer and I print off 2 cases of paper on it just through tax season.

I am on my fourth drum and am nearing 100,000 pages with my MFC-8860DN. I am getting roughly 25,000 pages for each drum. No problems at all.Commenting to those who have noted that the cost of the drum is more than half the cost of a new unit: Yes, the cost of the drum and toner (which I have replaced 14 times) together far exceeds the cost of the printer's purchase price of about $300, but the overall cost per page comes to about 2 cents per page (printer+toner+drum = $1,900 for my 100,000 pages) before paper cost. This is a pretty good value in my estimation, given that the printer pumps out pages at 20+ppm, and also does an excellent job at scanning, duplexing, copying, and faxing as well.

This is the 2nd defective Brother DR-520 drum unit I have bought. Both times I got a "drum error" message when I went to install the new drum. Brother customer service was worse than useless: they tell you to do what you've probably already done 5 times as per the instructions, then when you ask for a replacement unit for a brand new Brother item, they tell you the warranty is only for 3 months from the date you bought it. My Brother (MFC 8670 DN, a very nice machine)started telling me in December that the drum was about to run out. So I bought a new drum. Now in May I need to replace the drum. New one doesn't work. Brother tells me tough, warranty expired 90 days from the day I bought it, not from the day I installed it. Plus the drum -- good for 25,000 pages -- is supposed to be replaced every 6 months. Both this time and last time I got a defective brand new drum I've asked simply for a replacement unit that worked. Brother says "nothing doing." My advice to self and everyone else then is to just buy the no-name replacement drum and toner. The Brother drum and toner are 2-3-4 times as expensive as the no-names but you're paying extra for zero support and sometimes for items that don't even work.update Fall 2013I finally wrote to Brother headquarter in both USA and in Japan about the problem with the drums. They USA HQ actually responded. They were helpful and eventually I received a replacement drum (plus a complimentary toner cartridge), so full marks to them for that. So overall I would give the MFC 8670-DN 5 stars, Brother customer service 0 stars, and Brother HQ 3 stars (good for responding to me, bad for letting regular customer service be so useless)

I purchased this drum, and after I put it in my machine, it squeaked when warming up, and when printing. Over the next few days, the squeaking got worse, until it was just about unbearable. A new product shouldn't make this much noise! I contacted Brother chat support, and went through the steps they recommended and it was obvious that the drum was the problem. So I called Brother back, and they had me go through all the steps again and it was still obvious that it was a drum problem. They kicked it up to a higher level of support (by this time, I'd probably spent a couple of hours dealing with support) and we went through even more steps and I faxed the invoice to them, and they said that Smart Gadget was not an authorized Brother reseller, that from the serial number on the drum it had been manufactured in 2010, and while they said they would replace it, I should only purchase from authorized Brother resellers. Of course, you don't know who is and who isn't on the amazon website. THEN, I read through the reviews and sure enough, the drum was not delivered to me in a sealed bag, but a taped bag. Suspicious. At any rate, caveat emptor!

I am not a printer technician but I cleaned the printer cartridge several times but couldn't get rid of the smudges on both sides of the printed paper. The printer did give me a hint that the drum was ready for a change. I ordered a new drum and cartridge and not the printer is working like new. I saved some money doing it myself, plus the satisfaction of winning. Thank you Amazon.

This drum works fine for me. It lasts about 30,000 pages, or 6 months, and is an acceptable lifetime. What most people don't realize is that when you buy other similar printers, you end up paying much more for your toner and drums because the drum unit is part of the toner cartridge. Brother splits them out to keep the cost of your toner cartridges down.I've found that the annual toner + drum cost for a HL-5240 is about 30% less than the toner for a similar HP.
